School places

PRESSURE on places at Thurnham CE Infant School has eased for next year’s intake, parish councillors were told. Reporting on a meeting with the

head teacher and chairman of gov- ernors, parish council chairman Daniel Skinner said that in contrast to last year’s shortage of places in the area, no-one from Thurnham had been turned away. It was considered that contribu-

tory factors included the changing birth rate and the expansion of St John’s School at Grove Green.

to raise a number of issues after being made aware of talks dating back four years between the county council and Greenacre Woodland Burials. The company, which runs four burial sites across the country, is interested in leasing an area of the millennium park which includes Thurnham Castle. Parish councillors sought assur-

ances including the protection of the castle site if the scheme is approved, but KCC’s reply left some questions outstanding.

THURNHAMParish Council hopes an agreement is in sight following ef- forts to save a play area. Parish councillors and residents

had accused Maidstone Council of “disguising” a plan to close 20 rural playgrounds including Peverel Drive park in a news release claim- ing to invest in play areas. A 126-signature petition was

raised by parents protesting about the closure and the lack of consulta- tion by the borough council.

EVEN M.S?

YES The council will put its concerns

to KCC cabinet members and Greenacres representatives at a site meeting on June 10.Ward Cllr Jenny Whittle, who plans to attend, said shewould stress the issue of Thurn- ham Castle and the incompatibility of having hearses regularly travel- ling the A249. Members queried KCC’s estimate

of five burials aweek at the site, sug- gesting this would not be economi- cally viable, and were concerned about the future of the area, should the company be taken over or cease trading. Mary Richards, secretary of the Bearsted and Thurnham Society, said accesswas limited between cer-

parish council meeting, heard good progress was being made towards an agreement. This would involve using Section 106 money to creno- vate the site at Peverel Drive. Maid- stone Council could then consider exempting the playground from its list of “non-strategic” sites. Parish chairman Cllr Daniel Skin-

ner said the parish council favoured the plan but the final decision rested with Maidstone Council.

tain times at Greenacres’other sites, which she feared could happen at White Horse Wood. She said: “At the moment you can just go there any time for awalk. Lord Lockhart’s visionwas that this should be a mil- lennium flagship park for the bene- fit of everyone.” The parish council does not op-

pose the scheme in principle but wants safeguards on the identity of the country park and for the project to trigger funding for a roundabout on the A249. Greenacres said the scheme

would enhance facilities with a new visitor centre, toilets, improved paths and the removal of parking charges.
