2013 and 2014: focus on packaging education around the world


supporting packaging education programs around the world, but especially in developing countries. For 2014 the Organization has committed more funds than ever before for education support because it understands the importance of promoting packaging education around the world. Through these efforts, WPO contributes to accomplish its mission: better quality of life for societies around the world.

During 2013 WPO supported some very successful packaging training programs like the 5 days Residential Training Program on Packaging Technology in Lagos, Nigeria, that joined 34 students from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa. As part of it, the students participated on presentations about specific topics and visited three local packaging converters and end users. Another one, organized by APO (African


Packaging Organization), was a training program focused on Competitiveness through Quality Packaging, in Kenya. The program joined 20 students with the objective of exposing small and medium enterprises (SME’s) to packaging as a tool for adding value to products and improving business performance. For 2014, WPO Education Committee


received and is analysing six proposals of packaging training projects. In order of priority to receive WPO’s funding are: Ghana, Nigeria, Vietnam, Turkey, Sri Lanka and India. During the Barcelona meeting,


representatives from 24 packaging associations, members of WPO, also judged 249 packaging projects, from 35 countries, that entered for the WorldStar Awards 2014. The number of winners, by category, were: Beverage 45 (out of 64 entries); Food 39 (73 entries); Health & Beauty 9 (32 entries); Household 7 (13 entries);

Pharmaceutical & Medical 7 (10 entries); Electronics 6 (11 entries); and Other 26 (46 entries). The country that received the most awards was Japan with a total of 14 WorldStar winners. 

The next WorldStar Awards are now open for entry and the judging is due to take place the week commencing 17 November 2014 in Sri Lanka. The entry closing date will be 10 October, 2014. www.worldstar.org
