Content: Presentation by Coastal Building Inspections & Engineering staff on the topic of high wind design and construction. This course will provide a general background on the Texas Department of Insurance windstorm inspections program, process, building specifications, engineering requirements and forms. The presentation will cover new developments in the TDI Windstorm program including proposed laws affecting the program.


Hot topics will include the use of proper fasteners, corrosion resistance, shearwall construction techniques, material requirements, and how to handle a state windstorm oversight. The presentation will also provide insight to the procedures used by Coastal Building Inspections for determining compliance of construction with the windstorm design requirements during field inspections.


Craig Roll, president of Coastal Building Inspections & Engineering, has been involved with residential building in the Houston area since 1980. He has performed windstorm inspections and training for the past 15 years. With his down to earth teaching methods, Craig has trained many builders in windstorm construction practices and methods. Additionally, he currently serves on the Bay Area Builders Association (BABA) board of directors.


Guidelines for Design and Construction of Inground Swimming Pools in Texas


Instructor: David Eastwood, P.E., Geotech Engineering and Testing Date: Thursday, May 22 Time: 3:30 pm to 5:30pm Fee: $35 members / $50 nonmembers Content: Many in-ground swimming pools are built in the Houston area, and they are at risk for movements, cracking, etc. The purpose of this course is to highlight prudent practices and guidelines for design and construction of pools to protect the public and pool contractors against a faulty pool design and construction. Pool design and construction should always consider the effects of subsoil, groundwater, structural considerations, drainage, trees, slopes and more.


Energy Code Update 2014


Instructors: Clayton Farmer and Kathy Howard Date: Thursday, 05/29/14 Time: 8:30am to 1:30 pm Fee: $45 members / $60 nonmembers Content: This course will offer Green Building and building program updates, including Green Built Gulf Coast (GBGC), EFL, Energy Star, Builder Challenge, and the future of efficiency and labeling. We will also include an energy code update, including the 2009 IECC, 2009 IRC, and City of Houston codes. We will wrap up the afternoon with a panel and Q&A session, so come prepared with your questions!
