• Jane Robinson, a senior associate in the private client department of Henmans Freeth LLP, has been awarded the STEP ‘President's Prize QP Student of the Year (E&W) (Accounting & Administration) 2013’ for her essay on estate accounts and who is entitled to see estate and trust papers. Henmans Freeth reported in December that Robinson had successfully passed her final STEP (Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners) thesis, attaining an A+ in the ‘Accounts and
Admin’ module. Now STEP has announced that Robinson has scored the highest marks in England and Wales of any studying practitioner for that module and will therefore receive the prestigious award. STEP is the worldwide professional association for practitioners dealing with family inheritance and succession planning. The Society helps to improve public understanding of the issues families face in this area and promotes education and high professional standards among its members. Robinson specialises in the administration of a wide range of estates and complex legacy administration issues for charities and private individuals. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Paralegals; and a member of STEP's 'Contentious Trust and Estates', 'Charities (UK)', and 'Cross-Border Estates' special interest groups.
• Audit, tax and advisory firm Crowe Clark Whitehill’s Thames Valley office has strengthened its capabilities, appointing partner Richard Baker on April 1. Baker joined the team from the firm’s Midlands office, where he has been a partner since 2008. He primarily works with larger corporate and owner-managed businesses with a manufacturing focus; he is a regular commentator in the pharmaceuticals press on issues affecting that sector; and acts as technical adviser to a number of small firms. Charged with the responsibility of becoming the firm’s training partner, he is responsible for developing a national training strategy to help future-proof Crowe Clark Whitehill and to develop young talent within the firm.
• Law firm Parrott & Coales has appointed Sarah Plumridge. She will take over from John Leggett who retired at the end of April after being managing partner for 19 years. Within two years of joining the firm in 2000, Plumridge was made a partner and has almost 20 years' experience as a commercial and residential property solicitor. She follows in the footsteps of other great leaders at Parrott & Coales including Leggett and Margaret Dickens who in 1949 became one of the first female solicitors in the UK and the firm's first-ever female managing partner
in 1978. Plumridge will also bring her skills in business development and use these talents to strengthen Parrott & Coales' position in the commercial and personal legal services market.
• Thames Valley Berkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has appointed Robin Barnes as a non-executive member of its forum. With 30 years' experience in banking, Barnes
will represent the private sector. A senior banker in the region for 20 years and currently RBS regional director for Solent and Thames Valley, he is also a previous chairman for Young Enterprise in Berkshire and has been both a Reading and Slough Chamber committee member over the years. Barnes commented: “I want to see a vibrant growing business community and to secure a good long-term future for the next generation through education and by inspiring them to have a broad and open outlook to society and the world around them."
