Postgraduate qualifications at Bucks New University give opportunities to drive careers forward

Buckinghamshire New University supports innovation in business and encourages students to develop entrepreneurial and professional skills to enable them to thrive in a contemporary workplace

The University focuses on supporting students to be resilient, embrace new thinking and develop innovative ideas while enjoying close working links with industry.

This can be seen through the MA in Human Resource Management (HRM) which is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and provides the underpinning knowledge required for CIPD chartered membership.

“The opportunities for networking offered through the course are also very valuable.”

Jessica Lodge, an employee relations adviser at Travelodge, was the latest recipient of a Student of the Year Award presented by the Chiltern branch of the CIPD to the outstanding student on the course. She has completed the MA in Human Resource Management at Bucks New University.

Lodge received the award after achieving high marks throughout the programme and particularly in her dissertation on ‘Investigating the well-being of hotel managers at Travelodge’.

The award-winning student said: “The course was difficult especially as I had to fit my studies around my working day. However, having the opportunity to put academic knowledge into real practice made the course come to life and it was certainly a very rewarding experience.

It can be completed full-time over a year or part-time over two years, or as a ‘top-up’, and covers areas including performance management, strategic perspectives of human resource management and the business context, with students also researching and writing a dissertation.

Course leader Jill Walters said: “The course continues to flourish and we are proud of the wide range of skills students develop and the way we support them to become astute and proficient human resource practitioners and drive their careers forward. The tutors on the programme are dedicated specialists with professional experience.

“Many students typically study with us to enhance their career development and come from a full range of public and private sector organisations such as BT,

“I was delighted to win the Student of the Year Award. It’s a great privilege and it will provide an additional accolade to add to my CV.

“I am looking forward to revealing the key learnings from my dissertation to the Travelodge HR team and it would be fantastic if I was able to transfer this information into the company’s employee assistance programme.”

Julie Hadley, who is responsible for HR at Beechdean Dairies in High Wycombe, is a past winner of the Student of the Year Award after taking 18 months out of work to study for the qualification.

She said: “Gaining the MA in Human Resource Management boosted my confidence immensely. I had plenty of experience working but I then achieved the academic qualification to underpin that experience.

“Ultimately, taking a year out to do the MA HRM was an investment in myself and probably one of the best things I've ever done.
