Get behind UK’s young entrepreneurs

According to findings by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor almost 10% of under 30s were starting a business in 2012

Yet research carried out by Shell LiveWIRE and Youth Business International suggests that Britain's young entrepreneurs trail behind the rest of the world when it comes to sustaining a business that pays a wage and makes a profit.

The report, released last autumn to coincide with Global Entrepreneurship Week*, showed that, including those who’ve started a company not yet paying a salary, the UK’s rate for converting potential young entrepreneurs into business owners is still less than half (49%). This rate of conversion is well behind countries such as Singapore (84%), China (82%), the Netherlands (55%), Brazil (56%) and the USA (51%).

Lack of support to inspire and equip young entrepreneurs throughout the UK education and business sectors can hinder their progress or put them off altogether.

Haines Watts launched its ‘Young Entrepreneur of the Year’ competition four years ago to support and recognise business owners under the age of 36 that have ‘taken the plunge’. It also provides them with a website and a social forum on which to share ideas and find inspiration.

Those who enter the competition and are successful in getting through to the finals receive year-long business mentoring sessions with a partner at Haines Watts, PR for their business and prize money.

Grundon Waste Management acquires Wallingford company

Oxfordshire-based Grundon Waste has acquired Wallingford business Arundelle, a specialist industrial services and cleaning company, for an undisclosed amount.

The move, which took effect from May 1, will enable the waste management solutions expert to expand its range of services into key areas such as confined spaces cleaning, decontamination, site decommissioning, pollution control, scheduled inspection and maintenance, and a HAZPACK/ HAZMAT spill response service.

Clayton Sullivan-Webb, managing director of Grundon, which has its headquarters at Benson and operates throughout the county and surrounding region, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Arundelle into the Grundon family. This acquisition is the culmination of a long-standing relationship between our two companies and I believe it is the beginning of an exciting new growth period for our business.

Arundelle’s specialist teams will enable us to widen our offering across the industrial cleaning arena and pursue new opportunities in key sectors, such as hospitals, universities, laboratories and factories.”

Arundelle managing director David Green, who will join Grundon in a new role as industrial services manager, added: “Joining the Grundon group enables us to take advantage of its extensive capabilities and impressive reputation within the industry.”

The move will see Arundelle and its core team of five employees leave the company’s current base in Wallingford and relocate to the nearby Grundon operation at Ewelme. Founded in 1970 and boasting an unbroken safety record, Arundelle’s fully qualified and compliant expert teams also handle projects such as tank and vessel cleaning and laboratory services, together with hazardous/toxic environment projects, legionella sterilisation and water treatment services.
