It’s a Knockout!
Maidstone’s Flood Recovery
The winter of 2013-14 saw the worst flooding in Maidstone borough in over a decade, with over 1,300 homes and businesses affected. Maidstone council staff worked round the clock with partners from Christmas Eve to set up rest centres, find emergency accommodation for residents, deliver over 5,000 sandbags, check buildings and trees were safe, and provide information and advice.
Join the fun at the iconic “It’s a Knockout!” at Mote Park on 8 June, and raise funds to help local disabled children. Teams of 7-10 people can enter (minimum £500 sponsorship per team, £50 per person). To register call Emma on 07912 308576 or email
emma@childrentoday.org.uk and get sponsored to have fun!
Events in the Gateway Come along to Maidstone Gateway from 12-16 May for Mental Health Week, or from 2-6 June to celebrate National Volunteers Week. There will also be a Healthy Living and Welfare Advice event on 3 July.
Running Route at Cobtree Manor Park
There’s a new Run England 5k running route at Cobtree Manor Park, Forstal Road, Aylesford. It’s a challenging course with some hilly areas and lots of very muddy sections!
Penenden Heath
With the immediate recovery phase now over, Maidstone council will be working with residents to look at what elements of our emergency response worked and what could be improved upon, and what can be done to protect homes and businesses in the borough in the future.
The council is administering four grants on behalf of the government to help residents and businesses through the recovery. Small and medium-sized businesses directly or indirectly affected by the flooding have until 18 April to apply for the business support grant, while residents and businesses can apply for council tax discounts and business rates relief. The repair and recovery grant will help to fund additional flood resilience works for homes and business premises. Visit
maidstone.gov.uk/winter for guidance notes and application forms.
The council has also commissioned the National Flood Forum to work with flood hit communities to help them recover and improve resilience to future incidents. The flood forum roadshow will provide information, advice and support to residents and businesses.
The Green Jubilee spectacular
Maidstone hosted its biggest recycling event of the year when The Green Jubilee landed in Jubilee Square on Saturday 15 March.
People of all ages enjoyed a mixture of fun activities, including cooking demonstrations, a Ready Steady Cook competition with celebrity chef Richard Fox, street entertainers, costumed performers and more. There were giveaways, a lucky dip and a competition for children to design a recycling truck.
The Love Food Hate Waste roadshow gave out practical information and handy tips to help residents reduce their food waste, including recipes for creating tasty meals from leftovers.
Spring has arrived! These Crocuses at Penenden Heath are part of a new bee friendly bulb display planted for insects. They provide nectar at a time of the year when other blooms are scarce. The mix includes narcissus and tulips that will flower until early May.
