School comes out of special measures
TOVIL’S Archbishop Courtenay C of E Primary School has been taken out of special measures, but still requires further improve- ment, according to a Government inspector. The comments from Ofsted fol-
low another inspection in March of the Ecclestone Road school, which was declared inadequate in No- vember. The latest Ofsted inspectors’ re-
port says teaching has improved, but still requires improvement to ensure all pupils make good progress over time. Pupil behav- iour and safety and achievement also requirework. The report continued: “Pupils
have not made consistently good progress in English and mathe- matics, but the current rate of progress in some classes is not suf- ficiently rapid to enable pupils to make up lost ground rapidly.” It said a significant minority of
older pupils were still working at levels two years behind those typ-
ical for their ages. It added: “Pupils’ attitudes to learning are improving, but where teaching isweaker, some pupils’ at- titudes to learning are not consis- tently positive, and this limits their learning.” The inspector said much of the progress required had been helped by the appointment of an interim executive board at the school. It said leadershipwas now good, adding: “Good leadership and management have ensured that rapid progress has been made in addressing the areas for improve- ment identified by the previous in- spection. “Leaders and managers at all
levels have been successful in cre- ating a culture of high expectation and continuous improvement.” The inspector was pleased to
note that attendance had improved since the last inspection, and was now close to the national average. Most pupilswere also punctual for lessons.

ASK DEBBIE........ for help, advice and assistance
Dear Debbie,
I have been caring for my sister whom has learning disabilities for the past 3 years. As much as I do not mind caring for her, I feel that I need a break. I would like to get away for a week with my husband and children but am worried about leaving my sister. I would hate for her to have to go into a care home whilst I am away so was wondering if there any alternatives to a care home? Kind Regards, Alexandra P

Dear Alexandra,, Nature site handed over
A 30-ACRE nature reserve in Tovil has been handed over to the community by a developer. The site – next to Taylor Wimpey’s new estate off Postley Road – will be
cleared and turned into a natural wildlife habitat and recreation area. Maidstone Council, Tovil Parish Council and theValley Conservation Soci-
ety will be jointly responsible for the beauty spot, with Taylor Wimpey pro- viding £500,000 to establish it and for future management, as part of its planning agreement to build Hayle Park. Cllr Derek Mortimerwas among those at the handover by JoannaWebb.
Also pictured, from left, are David Fleck, from Valley Conservation Society, Maidstonemayor Cllr Clive English, Cllr Ian Chittenden, Taylor Wimpey site managers Akin Akinbubola and StewartWood, Cllr Mike Hogg and Dennis Usmar and Bryn Cornwell, both fromValley Conservation Society.
Extension ‘too close to neighbour’
A PROPOSAL to erect a side and rear extension at 28 Church Road, Tovil, was refused. Maidstone Council’s decision notice said the “depth, height
and proximity to the boundary withNo30 would result in a sig- nificant loss of light and an overbearing impact upon this property”.
