JOE PINNINGTON EXPLORES THE HISTORY OF THE TROPHY FOUGHT FOR DURING THE WORLD’S GREATEST GOLF TOURNAMENT.

The original cup was

made by an Edinburgh

Silver Smith, Mackay

Cunningham & Co

AFTER A PROLONGED AND exhaustive survey that ranged as far as my close relations and fellow Sunday morning golfers, I have concluded that of all the most famous trophies in British sport the three most recognisable are: The FA Cup, The Ashes urn, The Open Championship trophy. On the rugby front the first England

Scotland match was in 1871 but the Calcutta Cup was not introduced until 1879. It is a fine trophy but not, I fear, as prominent as the three listed above.

The FA Cup The Football Association Cup was first played for in 1872 and after a number of dramas, including the cup being stolen and then becoming too fragile, the present Cup was made and first played for in 1911.

The Ashes Urn The Ashes Urn came about in 1882 when The Honourable Ivo Bligh, the England Cricket Captain, lost a test series in Australia. The scoffing Aussies allegedly burnt the ball or possibly a stump and placed the ashes in an urn. For decades Ivo kept the urn at his home but presented it to the MCC in 1928. This trophy is barely 4 inches high but has a huge significance beyond the mere playing of cricket. The Ashes Urn came to represent all that was justifiable to the Australians for the next 100 years. It became a symbol of their ancestry and relationship with Great Britain as the country grew and prospered to become the land it is today. Little wonder that the Australians have monopolised the ownership of the Urn and always play so hard to win it.
