The harold hilTon Medal Tournament was inaugurated in 1997 exactly 100 years after Harold Hilton’s second victory in The Open Championship at Hoylake in 1897. Hilton, a Member of Royal Liverpool, had previously won The Open in 1892 at Muirfield. One of the early greats of golf, he was the first player to capture both British and American Amateur titles in the same year, 1911. In total, he won the British Amateur Championship four times in 1900, 1901, 1911 and 1913 and Royal Liverpool was proud to honour his record by initiating this tournament which bears Hilton’s name. The event is a Mid Amateur Open

Scratch Event consisting of a scratch stroke play qualifying round on Saturday morning with the top 40 players moving on to a match play phase in five flights of eight players. Only the top eight qualifiers are eligible to win the Harold Hilton Medal but winners of all flights receive a commemorative bronze medal with that for the Champion being a handsome Gold one. The 17th Harold Hilton Medal was

staged over the weekend of 8th and 9th June 2013. As in previous years, there was a strong UK and European flavour to the field with competitors coming from Germany, Spain, Sweden and the Home Nations making up a field of 63 competitors. The leading qualifier was Jamie

Turnbull from Rowlands Castle in Hampshire with a gross 77 in trying conditions with the qualifying cut off for the Championship Flight being 81. The Links as ever were presented in tip

top condition. The final was played in testing conditions, meticulously refereed by the Captain and again producing some excellent golf. The German competitor Jorg Paulus, a very deliberate player, played the steadiest golf gaining a lead in the early holes. Despite some excellent golf tee to green by James Bishop (Little Aston) his reading of the true Hoylake greens was his downfall and Herr Paulus ran out a comfortable winner. The Harold Hilton Medal will take a

year out in 2014 in order to reduce the wear and tear on the Links prior to the Open Championship. n
