Line-up for music festival


MAIDSTONE’S restaurants and pubs will serve up a giant helping of music for the fourth Maidstone Fringe Festival on May 1-5. Venues lining up acts for the May


Day bank holiday extravaganza are The Style & Winch, Earls, The Druids Arms, The Flowerpot, The Source Bar, Stepping Stones Studio, The Rafters, The White Horse, The Art Lounge, Pizza Express, The Art Lounge, The Royal Albion, The Swan, Frederic, The Walnut Tree and Pops Café. New this year will be a music stage in Jubilee Square.


Thief in court


A SNODLAND woman received a suspended prison sentence and a four-month curfew after admitting shoplifting and forgery. Natasha Turner (42), of Willow-


side, forged three travel warrants and stole clothingworth £150 from a shop in Commercial Road, Strood. She was sentenced at Sevenoaks Magistrates Court to 60 days in jail, suspended for 12 months and or- dered her to remain at home be- tween 7pm and 7am. She must also pay £309 compen- sation and an £80 victim surcharge.

OUT-of-hours services at Tun- bridge Wells Hospital in Pem- buryneed improvement, says the Care Quality Commission. The inspection found that while standards of care, treatment and management were being met, when it came to standards of staffing and caring for patients safely, more needed to be done. Inspectors studied A&E, surgical assessment unit, medical assess- ment unit, intensive care, theatres andwards.


The report noted patients were pleased with the treatment and care they received and how nursing staff were keen to protect patients’ dignity. The report said: “We heard that patients had been shown how to operate their beds and the call bells on admission to the ward. A rela- tive told us that staff had been “very good to Mum” and that when she was in severe pain, staff responded straight away with anal- gesia.”


Fruit award for scientist


DR Angela Berrie, fruit pathologist at East Malling Research, has been awarded the David Hilton Memorial Award for services to the fruit in- dustry. Dr Berrie is pictured receiv-


ing her award at the East Kent Fruit Society annual meeting, from president Simon Brice. The award is an annual


presentation set up in the name of fruit grower David. Previous recipients have in-


cluded growers, managers, advisers, research scientists, technologists, lecturers and others from key industry roles.


However, while appropriate arrangements were in place to en- sure medicines were available, in- spectors said they were not stored or managed safely. Their report continued: “We


found that staff were supported and that the trust monitored the quality of care that patients re- ceived. “However, we found that there


were not enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet peo- ple’s needs.”


Driver curfew


AWEST Malling man was banned from driving for 40 months and is- sued with a curfew after he admit- ted drink driving following an incident on the A20 London Road at Larkfield. Daniel Curd (37), of Mareda
