Where I live... West Malling Parish Council
Items discussed at the parish council meetings in January and February included:
Street lighting switch off Tonbridge and Malling is the third district in Kent to have its street lights switched off between midnight and 5.30am in selected areas. This will save KCC around £1million a year on energy bills and reduce light pollution. The street lights will be switched off in the following streets: County Grove, Epsom Close, Meadow Bank, More Park Primary School, Parsonage Court, Sandown Road, West Street and Woodlands Close. Please contact KCC if you are aware of any vulnerable people or groups who may be adversely affected by these changes. Further information is available on the following web address

Dementia Friends Champions (DFCs) Age Concern Malling is looking for volunteers to become DFCs as part of the dementia friendly communities project. You don’t need any particular experience or skill-set to be a DFC but you will attend a training session, receive ongoing support and join a growing network of people encouraging others to make a positive difference to people living with dementia. The countrywide challenge is to recruit a million volunteers by 2015. Please contact Age Concern Malling on 01732 848008 if you are interested in taking up the challenge.

Malling Society has already traced family members of nine of the names listed on the West Malling war memorial as part of recording West Malling’s contribution to the 1914/18 War. Please contact the society on
http://www.themallingsociety.org.uk if you can provide information on your own family history from that time.
High Street pedestrian crossing The parish council is actively involved in improving traffic control in the High Street (pictured right) and while councillors
routinely report incidents and faulty equipment to KCC Highways, they are aware that not every incident is reported. If you notice problems such as damaged signage, blocked drains, potholes, faulty lighting and road markings in the High Street and particularly near the crossing, please take a few minutes to report it to
www.kent.gov.uk/roads_and_transport/highway_maintenance or by phone using 03000 418181. If you experience a “near miss” type of incident from vehicles in the High Street, please report it to Kent Police, using the 101 phone number or talk to the police community support officers at the police contact point in the High Street on March 23 between noon to 1pm.
And some reminders from the last update:
The Pilsdon at Malling Community is running a food bank and will be pleased to receive both donations and nominations of families in need at their address in Water Lane.
Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council is working towards a draft local plan, the blueprint that will steer the number of homes, jobs and the amount of commercial and retail development in the area over the next 15 years. The first public consultation, scheduled for spring 2014, will give everyone in the parish the chance to see and comment on what is proposed for the future of West Malling.
South East Water’s metering programme has arrived in the West Malling area and South East Water has a range of financial support measures, for example the phase in option to help anyone having difficulties paying their water bills as a result of the switchover. Please contact South East Water on 0333 000 0001 for more information.
For further information on parish council meetings dates and times please contact the parish clerk on 01732 870872.
