onto the site via Cemetery Lane from early March for sevenweeks, so that infrastructure could be put in place. Berkeleywouldwork with residents and the Town Council to keep disruption to the minimum. Therewould also be close co- operation to make sure that funeralswere not disrupted. Cemetery gates Following a full discussion, the council agreed that aer appropriate safeguardswere in place, the gates to the cemetery will, in future, be locked. Thiswas agreed, because some visitors had been taking cars into the cemetery when thiswas not necessary and this has caused significant to damage to graves, kerbs and the lawn area. There had been occasions when car users failed to recognise that the cemetery needs to be a place of dignity, serenity and peace. Once adequate provisions for disability access, improved access forwater supplies and pedestrian accesswere dealt with, local residents and visitorswould be given reasonable notice before the gateswere locked. Lights Councillors had discussed whether they should consider the street lights in minor roads being switched off between midnight to 5.30am. The town has about 140 lights. About 40 lights will be upgraded over a few years and a further 40 or so are in main roads. The viability of turning out some but not all of the lights would probably not be cost-effective. It was agreed itwould not be appropriate to turn off some of the lights at the present time and reconsider the proposal once a programme of renewalswas completed. Gas works The parish councilwas advised that Southern Gaswould undertake essential gas main replacementwork from Holborough Road to High Street and then High Street toWaghorn Road. Signal box Cllr David Marks reported on a meeting with Network Rail’s project manager about the station signal box. The optionswere: to find a non-contentious use because of the difficulty of access; to relocate, but thiswould require planning permission as the box was a listed building and the new ownerwould need to meet the costs of dismantling and rebuilding whichwould be quite considerable; to secure the box and leave it in its present position.
