BIG WELCOME FOR ARNIE
MEET Arnie the horse who is the latest addition to the team at Leybourne Riding School which enables disabled people to enjoy life more.
The school was able to buy eight- year-old Arnie thanks to KCC Trudy Dean’s Dragon’s Den event last October when organisers won £2,000 to buy a new horse.
Cllr Dean, pictured with Arnie, hands out her annual £10k member’s community grant fund from KCC at this event each year when clubs and groups have three minutes to persuade the audience to vote for them. Residents have electronic key pads to register their choices.
Arnie is currently in training to carry his very special passengers and is settling in very well.

Instructor Nicola Smith said: “He’s proving to be solid as a rock. He’s a big hit with everyone and will be a real asset. We are thrilled to have him.”
The school teaches disabled and able-bodied riders, and pupils’ ages have ranged from three to 70. It does not get government funding and relies heavily on donations and volunteer help in its work with people with a range of disabilities.
ALL the fun of a great family day out is promised at East Malling’s Picnic in the Park, which takes place this year during the late spring bank holiday weekend on Sunday, May 25.
Join the picnic in the park beer tent and lots more.
The programme will run at the playing fields from 11am to 8pm and there will be a live music
Building on the huge success of last year’s event, this one is going to be even bigger and better with international food stalls, Beth’s dog show, more rides and activities for children, a
extravaganza starting at 1pm. Entry will be free and there will be a lucky programme competition and raffle.
Volunteers are needed to help on the day with selling programmes and raffle tickets and running children’s stalls and games.
Remembering World War I
Do you have any artefacts from World War I? A window display is being set up at West Malling library for the whole of April to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the conflict.
A variety of mementoes will be on show, ranging from personal treasures from local families to more generic items and will include medals, postcards and trench art.
Groups and individuals including Malling Action Partnership, Malling Society, Button Hook Society and St Mary’s Church have been helping to collect the display and donate items. These include the poignant metal disc known as a Dead Man’s Penny which was given to the next of kin of those who had fallen during the war.
The Malling Society is also organising an exhibition throughout May at the Clout Institute which will focus on all those from World War I who are named on the town’s war memorial.
