Green Cleaning:

It Is Essential to Your Family’s Good Health by Darrick Seconi

E

xtensive research makes it clear that many of the cleaning products commonly used to clean our homes and offices contain chemicals, toxins

and allergens that are harmful to people and pets. They may be especially harmful to children because they typically spend more time in direct contact with chemical residues on flooring and in carpeting, breathe air with higher concentrations of toxins, and their growing bodies are more susceptible to the effects of toxic chemicals. The residues of these toxic chemicals eventually leave the home or office to contaminate the outside air, soil, ground water and food supply.

Due to these concerns, many new products and cleaning services have been created to protect families from the harmful toxins and chemi- cals so often found in the heavily advertised every-day cleaners and cleaning services that are commonly used in homes and businesses. These environmentally-friendly products and services offer a better way to clean and disinfect homes and of- fices without subjecting people and pets to harmful chemicals and other toxins. There are even special clean- ing systems that prevent cross-con- tamination while ensuring that your home or office is spotless. However, green cleaning is more than just using products that are better for the envi-

ronment. Truly green cleaning systems are designed to maximize cleaning effectiveness; improve indoor air quality; protect the health and safety of people, pets, cleaning workers and the general public; and do it all in a sustainable manner that minimizes overall environmental impact. An essential part of these truly-green cleaning systems is the strict use of environmentally-preferable clean- ing products, tools and equipment. This reduces the life-cycle environ- mental impacts associated with the manufacturing and disposal of these products. Most use only certified en- vironmentally preferable products for which a Green Seal or comparable

standard has been established, and use only microfiber tools to perform all cleaning tasks. Microfiber cloths and mop pads contain 30 times the cleaning power of ordinary cloths or pads. Because microfiber can absorb up to seven times its weight in fluids, it requires less water, can be used multiple times, and lasts much longer than conventional string mops and cleaning cloths. Vacuum cleaners, at minimum, should meet CRI Green Label Program requirements and all have HEPA multilevel filtration sys- tems.

So why try to ignore the dust bunnies under the bed or give up precious free time to tackle soap scum every week when you can now choose a reliable, consistent maid service that uses a non-toxic, sanitary cleaning process. It will be an invest- ment in your family’s health and your peace of mind. It saves you the lost time in fighting sickness caused by allergens, harmful bacteria, or the toxic buildup of non-biodegradable traditional cleaning products. It also allows you to enjoy more free time to make memories, and allows you to enjoy coming home to a sparkling clean home; instead of being too ex- hausted to enjoy the product of your own hard work!
