Researchers at Duke Medicine Seek Volunteers for Diet Research Study

T

he DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet is designed to be a well-balanced approach to eating, and is proven to lower blood pressure in adults with high blood pressure. The 3-week DASH-CKDP study will evaluate

whether the DASH diet lowers blood pressure in adults who have both high blood pressure and kidney disease. Both high blood pressure and kidney disease are major risk factors for heart attack, heart failure and stroke. Research has proven that lowering blood pressure helps preserve kidney function and reduces the risk of these complications.

The DASH diet is high in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products and low in saturated fat and cholesterol. It contains the following food servings:

• 4-5 servings of fruit daily

• 2-3 servings of low-fat dairy foods daily • 2-3 servings of fats and oils daily

• 5 servings of sweets weekly If you qualify for the study, you will:

• Be asked to eat only the food provided for you • Be asked to eat lunch at the study center during weekdays • Have your weight measured each weekday • Have your blood pressure measured once per week • Have your blood and urine collected once per week • Be reimbursed for your time and travel to weekday study visits
