Mans up’

ort zone for a war zone. Tracking down troops eal in Afghanistan.

Nicky found many differences between working in Camp Bastion and her usual role at the BFBS headquarters in Buckinghamshire.

“One of the biggest challenges reporting on military operations is finding the relevant person to talk to. The logistics are so spread out and vast that you can sometimes be chasing your tail to find the right interviewee.

“There’s also the difficulty of finding the time to speak to that person, as everyone is flat out busy. On the other hand, the stories do come to you, as there is always something going on.”

During Nicky’s deployment in theatre, the lead formation was 7th Armoured Brigade. As well as interviewing personnel serving with the famous Desert Rats, she also had the chance to speak with a few celebrities.

“One of the highlights of my tour was meeting Gary Barlow. He was in Afghanistan to perform a concert for the troops. I had my photo taken with him too – he is such a lovely man, very genuine.”

“There were so many memorable moments, such as being invited to sit up on the flight deck of the C-17 aircraft, which was an incredible experience. But one of the most significant points during my deployment was on Remembrance Sunday. A special service was held at Camp Bastion – it was one I will never forget.”
