wooden variety peering down from some surface or another. And we got off to a cracking start with

dinner. My companion had spotted partridge on the sample menu left in the rooms only to be told by the waiter that it wasn’t on the menu that night but the chef would be happy to cook it anyway, no trouble. So far so fabulous and it just continued to

get better and better. We added celeriac soup, beetroot tart and

ribeye steak to the order and they were all beautifully presented and cooked to absolute perfection. Children are made very welcome here and

the Little Ducklings menu offers all the nursery favourites, spaghetti Bolognese, fish fingers and cottage pie as well as milk and chocolate chip cookies and fruit salad with sorbet. There’s even a dressing up box to keep them amused. Earlier we had checked into our room and

were still heady from exploring the vast array of goodies provided to make our stay comfortable. There was a complimentary dental kit with

toothpaste and a toothbrush, ear plugs, a shaving and mending kit, a vanity box with cotton buds, make-up pads, Baylis & Harding shower gels and body lotions as well as two pairs of his and hers fluffy slippers, super-soft socks and an assortment of sweets. Crisps, water, juice and a kilner jar of

homemade cookies were also provided to complement the tray of china mugs and the and tea and coffee supplies neatly placed on a tray on the landing on a table outside our door to be shared by us and the guests in the next room. If you have forgotten your straighteners just

ask for the DIY beauty box from reception. And for a tipple before dinner there was a

decanter of sherry and two cut-glass glasses on a slate heart. This is the sort of place where you need to

arrive early to soak it all up. Bedrooms, all named after ducks, Muscovy,

Buff Orvington, The Mandarin and Indian Runner are decorated in soft greys and whites. Beds are draped in the finest Italian Frette linen with faux fur throws and cushions.
