and Harry and Jack aged five and four, Emma is keen to be a stay-at-home mum for the moment. Her own background is
in marketing and Stuart is employed as a consultant so they are hoping the business will bring in a second income. With an initial
manufacturing order of 1,000, they are currently selling the backpacks through Amazon, local toyshops and their own website. “The response has
been really good,” says Emma, “the backpacks have captured the imagination of both boys and girls.” But these are not just
novelties to be played with. Closer inspection
reveals the3D designs are also extremely practical, useful bags. The two rocket tanks
on the back open out to reveal an ingenious space for hiding all manner of toys, books and treasure. The main
compartment offers a full- size space for lunch boxes, clothes or books and there is a drinks compartment and snack pouch on either side of
the backpack. “We have been led by
Harry really,” he knew exactly what he wanted to put in his backpack, how big it should be and how he wanted it to look,” says Emma. “Our boys love to
carry their toys around with them everywhere they go,” said Emma. “We wanted to design
something that allowed for that but also embodied their imaginative spirit.” The backpacks also
come with a wrist strap. “Well there’s no point
in having a jetpack if you can’t communicate with space!” explains Emma. There are also safety
measures built into the design with several reflective elements and adjustable straps. Emma says she and
Stuart wanted to focus on the adventure theme and there is already another idea for the next design. “I can’t really say any
more other than it will have an aquatic theme,” says Emma who is hoping to launch the new design at the end of this year. If those are as well
received as the jetpacks the couple could be well
on their way to launching a thriving business. “We are just a mum
and dad with kids who have put a kid’s idea into practice,” says Emma. And she adds: “I wonder
if Harry aged five might be the youngest creative director of a British manufacturing company?” For more information
