A SCHOOL has been reunited with an art deco shield which inspired pupils to excel in sport nearly a century ago. Markings on the rare shield in- dicate that it was a gift the South

Wales Argus gave to Newport High School for Girls in 1922. Newport historian Cllr Charles

Ferris became the custodian of the artefact. He said: “It was coming out of

the high school and was saved by the Newport historian David Woolven. “Now it has been given back to

the new school and it is doing what it used to.”

Town to host ‘dry’ music festival?

COULD Torfaen be the next Gwent town to see a host of chart-topping stars take to the stage as part of an alcohol-free musical festival? It is thought the Breakin’ Out

Festival could come to the area after a staff member at Ran- domz, a sustainable social en- terprise project team based at Cwmbran Centre for Young People, tweeted that initial talks were under way. Leigh Rowland said: “Great

developments with the @Break- inOutFest, the team are working hard to bring this dry festival to

Torfaen in 2014, #randomz” Randomz confirmed the festi-

val was a possibility but said no further details, such as a date or funding, were available. “Talks are ongoing over fund- ing,” said a spokesman for Ran- domz.

Rapper Tinchy Stryder head- lined the festival last held in September 2013 at Bailey Park in Abergavenny. X Factor finalist Amelia Lilly,

the Loveable Rogues and New- port rappers Goldie Lookin Chain also performed. Activities and entertainment

included a sports zone, stalls, funfair, circus skills taught by NoFitState Circus, bungee run and DJs located in the “creative village”. Twist and Pulse, the London- based street dance duo who made it to the final of Britain’s Got Talent in 2010, also hand- ed out some dance tips to the 2,000-strong crowd. Sharon Lewis, a recovered drug and alcohol addict, set up the festival to help people battling addiction. She has said the drink ban was a vital part of the festi- val’s message.
