Award-winning Italian restaurant up for sale

A NEWPORT restaurant is

up for sale after its owners decided to retire. Brian Lloyd and his wife Christine have run Chez Giovanni in Clarence Place for 13 years. But since Mr Lloyd, 65,

suffered a heart attack two years ago, the couple have continued to suffer health problems and decided to give up the business to spend more time at their home in Magor. Mr Lloyd said: “In this tough time, people are sell- ing restaurants simply be- cause business is bad. Our reason is because of our health. We still love this res- taurant.” Topolino’s wine bar and bistro, which is next to the restaurant and recently un- derwent a £85,000 refit, is also up for sale. At the moment, the res- taurant is only open from Wednesdays to Saturdays because they do not want to overdo it. Mr Lloyd said the restau-

rant has seen many famous faces over the years. It has been visited by boxing stars

Joe Calzaghe and Enzo Mac- carinelli and the restaurant sponsored Newbridge fight- er Gavin Rees two years ago. Several snooker

play-

ers, such as world cham- pions Ronnie O’Sullivan, Mark Williams and Terry Griffiths, visited the restau- rant when the Welsh Open was held at the Newport Centre. The business is up for sale for £599,999 with estate agents Preferred Commer- cial and includes ten bedsits on the floors above the res- taurant. Chez Giovanni was first set

up in 1972 by Giovanni Gu- lotta and his wife Anna, who were originally from Sicily. Mr Lloyd said he and his wife, who have been mar- ried for 41 years and have three children, were the res- taurant’s first ever custom- ers, and bought it from their friend, businessman Max Sadano in 2001. It has won the Voice maga- zine’s best Italian restau- rant competition for eight years running, and in Octo- ber was given the Best Res- taurant of the Year title.
