dog breeder A DOG-breeder has told of his anguish after claiming thieves stole three of his rare puppies. Brian James, 65, was about

to take his dogs for a walk on Pentre Tai Road in Rhi- wderin when he found fresh footprints in the mud near to the shed where he kept his hounds. The Huskamutes, or Alaskan Huskies, are a cross between Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies. MrJames said the dark-col- oured pups, worth hundreds of pounds each, had not run away as they depend on their mother’s protection for at least a couple more weeks. Anyone with information

Health chiefs planning for Gwent hospitals’ newroles

HEALTH chiefs have drawn up plans for how Gwent’s two current biggest hospitals will be adapted for new roles in treatment and care after the long-awaited Specialist and Critical Care Centre (SCCC) opens in 2019. The Royal Gwent and Nevill Hall Hospitals will become lo- cal general hospitals (LGHs), with a range of services, such as critical care, neona- tal, paediatric inpatients, and elements of emergency care transferring to the SCCC. economic downturn, it was hoped to replace both hospi- tals with new-build LGHs. But the resulting squeeze

on NHS capital budgets has meant that, while the SCCC plan for a hospital to treat Gwent’s sickest patients will finally go ahead, proposed “new” LGHs for Newport and north Monmouthshire will be housed in the RoyalGwent and Nevill Hall respectively. A report, part of Aneurin

Bevan Health Board’s me- dium-term plan, states that both have “a fundamental

part” to play in Gwent’s fu- ture hospital network. They will be intended as the first port of call for the major- ity of patients requiring hos- pital care, whether planned or unscheduled, leaving the SCCC to focus on the most se- rious and complex cases. Existing buildings at the

Royal Gwent and Nevill Hall sites will be re-used where possible, with limited, es- sential new-build schemes, although some will face pos- sible demolition. Though not guaranteed, the health board is assuming that capital costs will be funded by the Welsh Government, and it proposes to begin early the process of securing approval for work on these sites, start- ing in July 2015, when the full business case for the SCCC is also to be submitted. But physical alterations to

Imposing ban zones can beat cold callers

TORFAENcouncil is reminding people about cold calling zones in the borough. The executivemember for cor-

porate governance and commu- nity safety, councillorDavid Yeowell, said: “It can be quite frightening for someone if they are continuously having people they don’t knowknocking their doors. “We have established a num-

ber of these zones within Torfaen to help stop this.

“No cold calling is allowed in

these areas and newlegislation has created offences for repeat callers.” These zones give residents the

confidence to say no to people cold calling. If you feel like your homeor

area is being targeted, contact trading standards on 01633 647624. Alist of the no cold calling

areas is available on the Torfaen council website.

hospital buildings will not begin until after the SCCC is completed. The current esti- mate for this is late 2019. It is also estimated that four

or five years will be required to complete the revamp and re-organisation of both hos- pitals, at an estimated cost of about £3.72 million. In the next few years, work maintaining them prior to the opening of the SCCC will also have an impact on their future roles and is expected to cost in the region of sev- eral millions of pounds.
