southwalesargus.co.uk Artist heads back to school

WHENacclaimed Valleys art- ist David Garner was forced out of his studio of 16 years , he did not knowwhat to do. A simple solution was at hand when Risca Compre- hensive Community School offered him one of their rooms to use as a base. He snapped up head teach-

er John Kendall’s offer and started in December. The room is now his studio, and he also helps children with their work as part of an “unprecedented” role. Mr Garner said, of losing

his studio: “It was my worst nightmare. It’s incredibly dif- ficult to find suitable studio space in the Valleys.” Mr Kendall said he had jumped at the chance to in- vite Mr Garner to the school when he found he had been told to leave his studio, in the InfoQuest building in Pontl- lanfraith, and shut by Caer- philly County Borough Coun- cil as part ofbudget cuts.

Mr Kendall said: “It is a big boost for the school. It’s like the PE department having one of the Welsh rugby team working with them.” Mr Garner has worked with GCSE art students to de- sign a replica of the Arbeit Macht Frei sign that hung outside many Nazi concen- tration camps during the Holocaust, most infamously at Auschwitz. It was used for the commemoration of Holo- caust Memorial Day. Mr Garner, originally from Ebbw Vale, studied at New- port College of Art, Cardiff College of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. His work has won both the

Ivor Davies award and the Richard and Rosemary Wake- lin Purchase award.

NEW HOME: David Garner had his studio closed down by Caerphilly council but has been given an opportunity to relocate to Risca Community Comprehensive. (3734810)
