A GOLF course near Newport has tak- en just £2.50 in the past six weeks due to the horrendous weather. Parts of Caerleon’s municipal golf course are under three feet of water after constant rainfall caused the river Usk to burst its banks again. The course, at the Broadway, has been closed since Sunday, December 22. A handful of lunchtime visitors to the clubhouse are providing enough reve- nue to pay for manager Lee Fox’s fuel to get to and from work, but he described the past month as “a nightmare”.

Mr Fox, who is self-employed and sells food and drinks at the clubhouse, said: “We are completely under water.” Long-standing members recalled sim- ilar flooding in 1997, although Mr Fox has only been working on the course for the past five years.


He said: “On Friday, we sold a basket


of golf balls for £2.50 and, because the course is closed, no golfers are coming down, so the clubhouse is making next to nothing.” “It will take until the end of Febru-


ary to dry off and open. That’s another month of no income.” When asked if he was concerned the club may not be able to cope with such a long closure, he added: “It is a mas- sive worry, it’s not cheap to maintain the course. Hopefully once we get it cleared up everything will be OK.”
