Conversely my position working within teams recruiting new graduate talent gave me a unique perspective on the difficulties employers face getting the right people with the right technical skills into the right jobs. I knew from my own experience coming from a background in Theoretical Computer Science to Wall Street that previous knowledge of finance topics wasn’t a necessity when it came to finding the right talent. However, looking outside economics academic disciplines for pure technical talent meant placing extra demands on HR teams. It was clear they could use assistance choosing the best possible candidates drawn from the widest possible range of backgrounds.

It was this unmet demand that led me to leave Wall Street after 14 years of working at Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley and set up ZLemma.com with a serial entrepreneur and ex-recruiter. The idea was to take a scientific (i.e., objective and disciplined) approach to high end graduate recruitment of STEM students for positions where numerical or computational skills were a high requirement. To achieve this we came up with highly- tuned algorithms to score graduates and post graduates against specific roles in companies. These algorithms combine big-picture credentials like university and employment history with smaller details like coursework, projects, advisors, competitions.

After 18 months of development work and raising Series A VC financing, our product has been tested successfully in the U.S. and we are now working with the likes of Amazon, Goldman Sachs and Bank of America. By using ZLemma, these companies are cutting their recruitment processes significantly. by calling only those candidates for interviews who have the required technical, numerical background and credentials to succeed in their jobs.

Now we are bringing the online service to the rest of the world, offering students the opportunity to evaluate their suitability for exciting jobs in the US, Europe and Asia. We hope that by using ZLemma students will take a broader outlook on their careers prospects when choosing where to pursue their talent. We are not in the business of taking talented graduates away from a highly enjoyable career in engineering but we believe it’s important that all students have an understanding of the full range of options open to them in order to make the most informed decision. This should also give them the flexibility and confidence to try out a range of different career paths before settling on what makes best use of their talent.
