THINGS TO CONSIDER
When choosing to study Public Health at postgraduate level there are a number of considerations to take into account.
Specialisations
Universities will typically offer a selection of concentrations to choose from. These include: biostatistics, environmental health, epidemiology, health education and communication, health law, industrial hygiene, international health and development, maternal and child health, nutrition, social and behavioural sciences, and toxicology.
Career Options
Studying Public Health provides you with a vast array of career pathways. Think carefully about which one you would most like to follow so that you can structure your course decisions accordingly. Career options range from health administration to epidemiology, you may decide that want a career in management or would prefer to work within a research department.
Most Public Health courses at postgraduate level aim to equip you to take on leadership roles and to apply theoretical models to the decision making processes.
Skills
Your degree should provide you with analytical tools from other subject disciplines. The course will enable you to use methodology and statistics, epidemiology, sociology, social and cultural anthropology, social psychology, political science, economics and the science of management and organization. You learn these tools and apply them to problem analysis to implement appropriate health care policy.
You will also learn practical skills to enable you to create public health policies. Planning, monitoring, evaluation, adjusting and intervening into public health policies and programmes are all of course vital skills to acquire.
