FILMS TO WATCH O

2013 was a big year for film, bursting with sequels and grand releases from popular franchises such as Marvel and novel adaptations The Hunger Games and The Hobbit. Just like last year, 2014 will see an abundance of sequels packed with more punch including four superhero blockbusters, not only with new journeys with old friends but introducing some new characters, and, sadly, the beginning of the end of some popular journeys. Other than sequels, this year in releases also promises a whole host of star-studded films fighting for your entertainment and, of course, the prestigious Golden Globes and Academy Awards. Enjoy my carefully selected array of releases to note in your diary:

12 YEARS A SLAVE

Having already received almost universal critical praise including being described as “easily the greatest feature film ever made about American slavery” by The New Yorker’s David Denby, this release is one of the first and most noteworthy of 2014. Nominated for seven Golden Globes, 12 Years a Slave recounts a true story from 1841 during the period of the Pre-Civil War in the United States. Solomon Northup, a free black man and talented violinist from Upstate New York, is lured to Washington under the false pretence that he will receive work to find that he has been kidnapped and sold into slavery. However, there is hope that he may escape the harrowing experience and return to his family when he meets an abolitionist.

THE MONUMENTS MEN

In the closing stages of World War II, an allied platoon made up of seven museum directors, curators and art historians are tasked with rescuing prestigious artworks that have been stolen by the Nazis. When the Nazis go on the run, to find and protect Hitler from having the over five million pieces of artwork have been stolen destroyed, the unlikely heroes must get as close to the frontline as possible. Starring Matt Damon, John Goodman, Bill Murrary and Cate Blanchett as well as director and co-writer George Clooney.
