EARN WHILE YOU LEARN
Traditional academic routes aren’t for everyone and increasingly many young people are looking for ways to gain qualifications while they work. In 2013, the Age of Participation was raised from 16 to 17 and in 2015 it will rise again. This means that whilst young people can still leave school at the end of Year 11, they must stay in some form of formal training until they are 17 – whether at college, an apprenticeship or formal study as part of a job.
McDonald’s is one of many companies that offer its employees the opportunity to earn while they learn. In fact, its programme of training and personal development is widely considered to be one of the best around. Every year, the company invests over £40 million in training and qualifications for its people, giving them the opportunity to achieve a wide range of qualifications while they work, from English and maths GSCE equivalents, Intermediate Apprenticeships in Hospitality and Catering through to a Foundation Degree in Managing Business Operations for Business Managers. These are then skills that they can benefit from wherever their career takes them.
Nial Connacher, Internal Communications Coordinator, McDonald’s UK. Age 22
“I joined McDonald’s as a Crew Member in East Kilbride when I was 16. Within 12 months I was promoted to Crew Trainer, followed by promotion to Shift Manager soon after.
“I completed the Apprenticeship in Hospitality & Catering with McDonald’s in 2009. The course was challenging – I had to complete assignments alongside my day to day role – but I was supported by my manager all the way and it definitely made me better at my job.
“Completing a qualification really opened up new opportunities for me both inside and outside of McDonald’s. I got to work at the Olympic Park in 2012 as one of 2000 Olympic Champion Crew, and had the chance to watch some of the sporting events too. I also won Employee of the Year 2012 – and travelled down to London to receive the award – it felt amazing!
“Currently I’m working as an Internal Communications Coordinator on a secondment based at McDonald’s UK Head Office. In this new role, I’m responsible for delivering key messages to our employees, office staff, restaurants and franchisees.
“With passion and dedication, there is no limit to how far or fast you can develop at McDonald’s. It’s a business that really rewards hard work and always provides opportunities to grow – around 90 per cent of Business Managers and half of the UK Executive board started their career as I did, in restaurant. In everything I do, I never settle for less than perfect – and that’s a value my job has instilled in me.”
