2013 was a big year for film, bursting with sequels and grand releases from popular franchises such as Marvel and novel adaptations The Hunger Games and The Hobbit. Just like last year, 2014 will see an abundance of sequels packed with more punch including four superhero blockbusters, not only with new journeys with old friends but introducing some new characters, and, sadly, the beginning of the end of some popular journeys. Other than sequels, this year in releases also promises a whole host of star-studded films fighting for your entertainment and, of course, the prestigious Golden Globes and Academy Awards. Enjoy my carefully selected array of releases to note in your diary:

12 YEARS A SLAVE

Having already received almost universal critical praise including being described as “easily the greatest feature film ever made about American slavery” by The New Yorker’s David Denby, this release is one of the first and most noteworthy of 2014. Nominated for seven Golden Globes, 12 Years a Slave recounts a true story from 1841 during the period of the Pre-Civil War in the United States. Solomon Northup, a free black man and talented violinist from Upstate New York, is lured to Washington under the false pretence that he will receive work to find that he has been kidnapped and sold into slavery. However, there is hope that he may escape the harrowing experience and return to his family when he meets an abolitionist.

THE MONUMENTS MEN

In the closing stages of World War II, an allied platoon made up of seven museum directors, curators and art historians are tasked with rescuing prestigious artworks that have been stolen by the Nazis. When the Nazis go on the run, to find and protect Hitler from having the over five million pieces of artwork have been stolen destroyed, the unlikely heroes must get as close to the frontline as possible. Starring Matt Damon, John Goodman, Bill Murrary and Cate Blanchett as well as director and co-writer George Clooney.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST PERFECTING THE PERSONAL

STATEMENT! By Lydia Hasan

Following the summer release of The Wolverine, the sequel to X-Men First Class sees Wolverine sent to the past by Professor X in a desperate bid to change history and prevent a war that will result in doom for both humans and mutants. As the film is also a sequel to The X-Men: The Last Stand, the plot sees action from both 1980 and 2013. The X-Men ensemble from the original trilogy must combine with their younger selves to fight across both time periods, saving their future through the actions of their past. Under Bryan Singer’s direction, the film is set to meet the high expectations set by its comic book legacy.

Know your course You are writing this statement in order to persuade a Uni to accept you onto the course of your choice, so you need to showthem that you have just as much passion for the subject as the lecturers who teach it do!

4000 and 15! I remember these two numbers well, 4000 being the character amount I was trying to meet, and 15 the day of January I had to finish it by.

Yes, personal statements can be daunting, tedious and a bit of a pain to write, but they can be the key to getting that University place of your dreams.

Here are 5 simple things I wish I had been told when I was applying to University and writing my personal statement. I’m sure that these simple steps will make the whole process easier and more likely to guarantee you that spot at a top university!

Introduction The opening paragraph is ultimately the most important bit as this can be the key to whether or not the Uni carries on reading your statement or not. If you imagine a Uni administrator sat at a desk with a huge pile of statements they have to read through, they’re not going to have time to read them all word for word the first time round. They usually just glance at the introduction to see if it can advance to the ‘yes’ pile, in which case they will read the whole thing detail. So really make sure you make your opening sentences punchy and memorable.

Count and Grammar

Know Your

Depth over breadth Similarly, when talking about the subject you wish to peruse, it’ll be much more effective if you focus in on 1 or 2 key aspects rather than trying to talk about everything. For example, if you were applying for a History degree, don’t try and suck up by squeezing in every historical topic you’ve ever learnt at school and how much it all fascinates you. It’ll be much more effective to choose 1 or 2 historic events and pinpoint how learning about them really made you gain a passion for the subject and the desire to continue studying it at Uni.

Make it personal After all, it isn’t called a personal statement for no reason. You need to include things you have done that make you suitable for this course: A-Level subjects, extra-curricular activities, and hobbies can all be linked to your degree in one way or another. Also, the fact that you tell the Uni all the stuff you got up to during 6th form will impress them as they will see you have good time-management skills, which will prove useful once you are a Uni student.

Word count and grammar One of my most infamous habits is rambling and never taking a breath when I talk – you can’t write a personal statement like that though! Try and write really concisely so you stick to the word count, and also proofread it yourself, (or get a parent, friend or teacher) to check for crucial grammar and spelling errors. This is especially important if you are applying to a humanities or arts course, in which they’d want to know from the start that you had good writing skills in order to succeed on the course.

If you follow all these tips then you’ll be well on your way to getting that dream University place.

Good luck!
