• Law firm Parrott & Coales LLP has appointed Nick Hedges as business consultant and Stephen Carew as senior solicitor in commercial property, to support the rise in demand for its services. Tapping into Hedges' business acumen and 30 years' experience as a solicitor, the Aylesbury-based firm, which offers commercial and private client services, will develop and grow its range of legal offerings for businesses. Carew will also join the firm's property team, bringing 16 years' experience in commercial and residential property law. He has represented organisations large and small across a variety of sectors including a national hotel group and major high street banks. His role will be to expand the firm's commercial property services.
• Chris Hardy took over the reins as senior partner at leading Buckinghamshire law firm B P Collins LLP, from February 1. The move sees David Stanning retire from the firm after more than 38 years. Hardy, who celebrated his own 30-year milestone with B P Collins in 2013, will retain his position in the residential property and residential development team and combine the two roles.
• Thames Valley Berkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has appointed Janet Le Patourel as a non-executive member of its forum. Le Patourel is the LEP’s second community sector representative and brings with her 30 years of relevant experience. She is working as development manager for Citizens Advice Berkshire, which brings together the six independent Citizen Advice Bureaus in the county to extend and improve advice services across the sub region and to counter exclusion and deprivation. She is also a trustee of Regional Action and Involvement South East (RAISE), which is a representative body for the voluntary and community sector in the South East.
• Legal hospitality expert and employment partner Julian Yew (left) has joined the Penningtons Manches’ Reading office from the start of 2014 to expand the firm’s hotel and leisure practice in the Thames Valley. Previously based in the firm’s London office, Yew has risen to prominence in the London hospitality sector over the past 14 years through his advisory work for restaurants and international hotel operators.
• Thames Valley accountants and business advisers James Cowper has promoted Alex Nicholson to tax director. Nicholson joined the firm’s award-winning business tax team just over two years ago and has developed a strong client base, acting for both owner-managed and listed businesses, providing advice on all aspects of business taxation. He spends a considerable amount of his time working with fast-growing businesses, including many in the technology sector, with a particular emphasis on both tax efficient financing and international tax issues.
Dr Sam De Silva (right), a partner specialising in IT and outsourcing at the Oxford office of Penningtons Manches LLP, has been appointed to the EU Commission's expert group on cloud computing contracts. De Silva was nominated by the Law Society of England and Wales to represent the legal profession on the expert group and is the only private practice lawyer from the UK to be included on the panel.
• Henmans Freeth has welcomed Leon Arnold to the firm to continue the growth of its corporate practice. Arnold joins as head of corporate and brings with him over 15 years’ experience in corporate finance, most recently with Thomas Eggar. Having acted on corporate deals ranging from £500,000 to £100 million, Arnold's particular specialist areas include acquisitions and disposals; private equity and MBOs; corporate finance; and director and shareholder advisory.
• Kirsty Sandwell has been appointed Baker Tilly’s head of corporate finance for the south. Sandwell joined Baker Tilly in 2001 and is a mid-market M&A and private equity transaction specialist. She acts for corporate and privately-owned businesses, managing their acquisitions, disposals and private equity fund raising, either for development capital or equity release. She has particular expertise in working with businesses in the technology, specialist manufacturing and human capital sectors.
• With more than 20 years’ experience in the employment sector, solicitor James Simpson has joined Blake Lapthorn’s Oxford office as a partner. He has extensive experience in unfair and wrongful dismissal cases, employment-related disputes, employment law and good HR practice. He is an expert in data protection requirements protecting business assets, and dealing with
complex TUPE-related claims. A chartered legal executive with more than 20 years’ experience, Jackie Waller has joined Blake Lapthorn’s Oxford office in the residential property team. She has extensive experience in all elements of residential property and she undertakes an array of transactions including handling the legal aspects of a property transfer, lease extensions and remortgages.

• Shoosmiths is continuing to drive forward development of its national commercial team with the appointment of new partner Simon Edwards who will be based in Reading. Joining from Wragge & Co, where he was a senior associate, Edwards will bring with him extensive commercial contracts expertise and specific experience in a number of sectors, including automotive, food and drink, and facilities management. He specialises in commercial contract work, and has been lead adviser on a number of complex, strategic and business-critical outsourcings, often across multiple jurisdictions. He also regularly advises on day-to-day commercial contracts, including agreements concerning distribution, agency and franchising, and the sale of goods and services.
