Thames Valley’s young entrepreneurs 2014 competition launches

The 2014 Haines Watts Young Entrepreneur of the Year competition launched on February 1 and comes at a time when more young people than ever before are considering starting their own businesses

A tough and competitive jobs market, high university fees and a rising number of young people who don’t want to do the standard ‘nine to five’ have led to many joining the ranks of natural ‘self-starters’ and going into business themselves.

For all businesses, 2014 promises to be both an exciting and a challenging year.

John Bailey, partner at the Reading office of Haines Watts and chairman of the HWYE competition judges, explains: “Investors and financiers have been risk averse during the difficult years of recession but more are beginning to lend again and there are also some other, innovative funding propositions out there now. The UK economy is starting to show signs of growth so 2014 should be a better year for young entrepreneurs, if they plan carefully.”

To support young entrepreneurs, Haines Watts launched its competition four years ago and it has gone from strength to strength. Last year’s winner was 17-year-old Jack Greetham with his business Just Right Goods. Other finalists were Katy Hymas, Carina Evans and Alex Minchin.

To enter this year’s competition, which is free, go online at www.hwye.co.uk and submit a good business case on why you should win. As well as cash prizes, winners also receive a year’s free business mentoring from a partner at Haines Watts.

Visitors to the HWYE website will find online support on offer as well, such as helpful tips and a blog.

Competition applicants must have been in business for over a year and should live or work in the Thames Valley, defined as Berkshire, Hampshire, Surrey, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire. The competition is open to anyone who is under 36 years old on July 31, 2014 and there is no lower age limit.

If this isn't you, but you know someone who might be interested in entering, please pass on the contact details below.

Semi finalists will be chosen prior to a 'grand final' – with an overall winner – in the Autumn.
