ART & ABOUT

ART – LIVE AND OTHERWISE Every inch of the Norwich Arts Centre is used in their pursuit to bring you the freshest, most thoughtful and creative work in the multi-arts worlds, from the stage, to the bar, floor and even walls. From 11th Jan, those walls will be resplendent with the work of artist Zoe Benbow and poet Deryn Rees-Jones, whose collaboration ‘Where We Begin to Look: Landscape & Poetry’ can be seen right through until April 3rd. Benbow’s pictures, many made in situ, are the products of her inhabitation of, and engagement with, the landscape – the weather, the shifting light and contours of which she becomes a part while drawing. By juxtaposing these works with a range of poems by British and American women such as Charlotte Smith, Emily Dickinson and Sylvia Plath all of which have been selected by Rees–Jones, important questions are asked about the relationship between, and the construction of, the female self and the natural world. For a bit of live action, put the 29th Jan in your diary, when [Live] Art Club presents Ira Brand’s ‘A Cure for Ageing’. Te piece, which explores the notions of being young and foolish, and becoming old and wise, or about being young and wise, and becoming old and foolish was one of the highly recommended shows from the Edinburgh Fringe, in their Fringe Review. NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION: SAVE LIVES!

People from Norfolk are being asked to make 2014 the year that they start saving lives by giving blood. With the festive season coming to an end, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is hoping people in Norfolk will pledge to become regular blood donors for their New Year’s resolution. Te New Year period is often a particularly challenging time for blood stocks due to the wintry weather and dark nights keeping people indoors. And as hospitals need 7,000 units of blood each day to treat patients with chronic conditions like cancer and anaemia, along with people needing treatment for often life-threatening illnesses and injuries, NHSBT is encouraging new or returning donors to book an appointment

AN EPIC YEAR AHEAD It’s been seven years since the ghosts of programmes like Sale of the Century, Trisha and Knightmare left the building on Magdalen St, once known as one of the Anglia Studios, and since, EPIC. Since its redevelopment, the expansive building has played host to a huge variety of events – including Outline’s own hosted gig and fashion show. Tey’ve worked hard evolving its reputation from being a TV studio, to a fully fledged venue and the recent welcoming of former Norwich Arts Centre director, Stuart Hobday will see it strengthened further in that regard. Stuart told us that EPIC have been building a good team, ready to book a line-up of up and coming bands, and fill the 1000-capacity venue to the rafters with happy punters. Stuart was responsible for booking one of EPIC’s standout gigs of the last couple of years, when Te Fall came to Norwich in October 2012, as part of Norwich Sound & Vision. It was then that he really saw the potential of the venue. With a 500-seated capacity, two bars and the functionality to split into a smaller venue space, EPIC are looking forward to a packed 2014, with many exciting names already filling their booking sheets. Te building is available for hire and as well as a great space, still offers the recording facilities of its yesteryear incarnation. With a rebranding also on the cards for 2014, there are some EPIC changes ahead for the city-centre hotspot.

in the first weeks of 2014. Derek Carr NHSBT’s lead donor relations manager for Norfolk, said: “We are asking people here in Norfolk to do something very simple which should only take around an hour of their time, a few times a year. Making and keeping a New Year’s resolution to give blood will give you the satisfaction of knowing you are saving lives. We can also guarantee you a warm welcome, a nice drink and a biscuit to stave off the cold January weather.” Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor.
