The Luton Hoo gardeners, l-r: Jason Darcy, Keith Hersey, Dominic Duffy, Will Rogers, Kirk Brightman and, in front, Wayne Housden

“Elite Hotels bought this place in 1999, and then spent £60m doing it up. The mansion really needed that money spent on it. Elite Hotels did everything; the whole place was covered in scaffolding and they sandblasted the whole of the front. The stone was cleaned by hand. We must have had stonemasons on the site for two years solid, and they were top notch as well. They took every bit of hard landscaping off and rebuilt it - it was astronomical.” “We had managed on our own up until then; me outside, Zena inside. There was a big art collection, but that all got taken away to Ranger’s House in London, which now houses the Wernher Collection and is managed by English Heritage. The family had other bits and pieces.” Keith then took me on a tour of the gardens explaining

some history as we went. First port of call was the topiary gardens. “All the lawns were re-done. It used to be a rose garden. There were 450 roses in each bed and there were eight big beds and four little beds. But a rose garden of that size wasn’t practical. It was alright as a private, family area but, as a hotel when it is all floodlit at night and they have weddings where all the fountains are lit up, it wasn’t going to work.” “Luton Hoo is lovely in the daytime, but if you see it in the evening with all the chandeliers and lights, it is spectacular,” says Keith with considerable pride. Keith now has a team of five

gardeners to help him maintain the vast acreage. All the formal lawns are cut once or twice a week, depending on growth and time of year. No weedkillers are used on any of the lawns. They are kept at 30mm to keep them tidy.
