Turf Side Up TURF SIDE UP! The not so serious side of the industry Downtrodden down under
AUSTRALIA’S soccer chief, Frank Lowy, says Football Federation Australia (FFA) may seek compensation if the 2022 World Cup is switched to the winter.
Australia was one of four countries that lost out to Qatar, despite spending £25.27m on its bid.
Qatar has temperatures of 50 degrees Celsius in June and July, so FIFA is debating holding a winter tournament for the first time.
“Australia invested heavily in the World Cup process,” Lowy said. “Since we lost the bid, the FFA has been careful not to let its misgivings about the process be interpreted as sour grapes. But now, with increasing speculation about a change that will impact on us as one of the bidding nations, and because our competition will be affected, we have made our position public.”
An FFA statement asked FIFA to look at awarding “just and fair compensation” to those nations that “invested many millions, and national prestige, in bidding for a summer event”.
Qatar beat Australia, Japan, South Korea and the United States to win the right to host the 2022 World Cup - in the summer!
Not sent off for diving!
A FOOTBALL match between Salisbury City and Chester was disrupted recently when a parachutist landed on the pitch.
The game, at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium in Salisbury, was stopped shortly before the final whistle when the man, who had been taking part in a charity skydive, made an emergency landing.

The referee, who was in a good position, declined to give him a red card for diving!

A PRESS trip with John Deere to the Expo Centre in Berlin, Germany allowed our editor to meet up with his counterpart at Pitchcare Germany, Marcus Neemann.
This photograph is unusual for a couple of reasons; initially that Laurence’s star jump is both higher and more perfectly executed than a man half his age and, secondly, this is a rare shot of Loz without his camera!

MICHAEL Jackson’s statue outside Craven Cottage is being returned to the club’s former owner Mohamed Al Fayed, who was a friend of the late pop star.
It was installed behind the Hammersmith Stand in 2011 as a tribute to Jackson (who visited the ground in 1999) but split opinion among fans.
“Our supporters’ views on the statue have been made clear,” said new owner Shahid Khan. “I respect Mr Al Fayed and know he had good intentions in paying an individual tribute. However, the removal of the statue is the right thing for Fulham Football Club.”
A spokesperson said: “The statue is not part of the development of the stadium and will be returned in due course.”
Al Fayed, who sold the club to American Khan for £150m in July, insisted Jackson was a Fulham supporter.
At the time of its unveiling, Al Fayed said any fan who did not appreciate it could “go to hell”.
That Condor moment!
SINCE almost nobody - even with today’s supercharged equipment - can hit a 500- yard drive, a hole-in-one on a par-5 must be a rarity, at best, surely?
Those holes that are severe doglegs, or even a bit horseshoe-shaped, offer the best opportunity, as an intrepid long-hitter can attempt to cut a corner or clear trees or other hazards in order to go straight at the green, rather than playing around the dogleg in the normal fashion.
Holes-in-one on two such par-5s are known to have happened. One was even recorded with a 3-iron! That was made by Shaun Lynch, playing at Teign Valley Golf Club in Devon, in 1995, on the 496-yard 17th. According to a 2004 article in Golf World magazine, Lynch aimed straight toward the green on a horseshoe par-5, clearing a 20-foot-high hedge, then hitting a downslope on the other side that carried his ball to the green and into the cup.
The first-known ace of this nature occurred in 1962, according to Golf World. Larry Bruce took his drive over a stand of scrawny pines
on the 480-yard dogleg right par-5 5th at Hope Country Club in Arkansas, and found the cup.
But, there’s also one hole-in- one known to have occurred on a straight par-5. This monster drive was achieved at high altitude on the 9th at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in Denver in 2002. The shot was 517 yards in length, and the golfer who got the ace was Mike Crean. This is believed to be the longest ever recorded.
What is a hole-in-one on a par-5 called? Condor is sometimes recognised as the proper term, but triple-eagle and double-albatross are also correct.
And, if you happen to ace one of the few par-6’s in the world, you will have just recorded an ‘ostrich’!
