usiness and management education delivered by ABS members continues to be the most popular single subject of study for students in UK universities. From the latest data (2007/08 HESA), 1 in 7 of all students were studying business and management. This represents 234,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) students at all levels of Higher Education: from Foundation Degree, through traditional three and four year undergraduate courses, specialist Masters, MBAs and Doctorates.

Throughout first year I was bombarded with others to start volunteering or join the Nick Cage Society. At the time these seemed irrelevant. But at the end of my first year I was left asking myself, what have I done to make myself stand out? Nothing. Don’t make my mistake - Get involved.

First day, as your parents drive away you’re thrown into a new world. Here you’ll live with 12 strangers, cook your own meals and argue over who’s turn it is to take the bins out. It’s a fresh start, perhaps an opportunity to be whoever you want to be. Be you and you’ll have nothing to regret.

I did not take this advice, despite knowing it would take up 1 hour of the 168 in the week and would make my essays and exams stand out. It seemed like a good idea, I had one extra hour to stalk the Facebook profile of tofile of the mysterious person in the room next door, who only ever emerged to disappear at 2am and come sneaking back at 4, but come exam season I saw my mistake.

lecture. As I made my way through the year, I slowly became aware of my desire to travel and study abroad. These schemes are highly competitive. They don’t want those on the bare minimum, they want those leading the hockey team to victory, with the 2:1 and the charity bike ride.
Here’s the plan
It’s easy to get wrapped up in the bubble of university life but step outside those grounds and you’ll remember you have friends, family and pet rabbits waiting for you. Though they won’t expect you to be in constant contact, don’t forget them. Equally, they have their own lives and changes too so may not want to hear you endlessly talking about that night Jon threw a trolley through the kitchen window! Keep the balance right and you’ll keep them close.

How did you decide on the name Room 94? We practiced a lot as a band, in room 94 at school. That’s where the name comes from.
You compare yourself to All Time Low and Blink 182 but who would you say are your biggest musical influences? Well, I’d say All Time Low and Blink 182. That’s who we listened to when we were growing up and their music is why we wanted to start a band in the first place. But we listen to all types of stuff; even One Direction and Drake! We have a real mix of genres in there.
What is your most played song or band on your iPod? I know this sounds lame, but Room 94 – yes, I listen to the music my band plays all the time! Why wouldn’t I? I’m producing music which I think sounds good. So I’d say Room 94!
How are you feeling about touring with Lawson this October? Very excited – when we toured with them earlier this year, we got on really well with them. We have nights out, hang out a lot and they write really catchy songs; they’re great lads.

Who would be your dream group or singer to tour with? From a business point of view, I’d say One Direction. I mean, you can’t get much better than One Direction, can you? They’re the biggest band in the world right now. We’d be playing to massive crowds. But from a musical point of view, definitely All Time Low. They look like they’d be great fun to tour with, based on their tour diaries, DVDs and music videos.
You have a lot of young fans, what’s the weirdest or craziest thing a fan has ever done? Definitely the craziest thing was when I had a few fans waiting outside of my house. They must have found we lived through the return address that’s printed on the merchandise we send out. But even though we have some crazy fans, it’s better for them to be there, than not be there. Like, we’d rather have intense fans than no fans at all.
How did it feel to reach number 5 on the UK Independent Single breakers chart? Did you expect it? We never really expected anything, so it was definitely a surprise. We had really little promotion. We’re an unsigned band; we had no TV exposure and we made the music video on a really small budget – it was just us making the video ourselves, having a laugh at Madame Tussauds. Our fans are so supportive – obviously we’re really thankful for them to get us at number 5. To get there was good. But next, we’d like to get into the Top 100 singles, or get to number 1 on the UK Independent singles chart.
You seem to be doing a lot of song writing. What are the plans for the next few months; is there a new album to come?
We have the Lawson tour coming up. And I’m not really supposed to say this, but we’re also going to be on a support tour with Union J, which we’re massively excited about. Their fans are going to be even crazier than Lawson’s; we’re hoping to steal some of their fans! We’re going to record an album before that, which will hopefully be released early next year. We’ve been in the studio having some song writing sessions and recording songs.

Room 94’s latest single, ‘Superstar’, is outar , is out now. They will be touring with Lawson this October.

Emma Austin met the four girls in Hoxton Square, prior to a showcase of their new single, to find out exactly what makes Neon Jungle potential pop world-beaters.
So, your new single Trouble is out, who would you say is the biggest trouble maker? Jess: I think Asami is a little cheeky monkey, she is. She’s like a little gremlin, you blink and she’s like climbing up a wall! See she’s not denying it.
Are you all quite similar characters and do you all get on? Amira: We all get on but we’re all totally different characters. Asami: We’ve got very different aspects to our personalities.
There’s been a big revival of girl bands in the last few years, so what makes Neon Jungle different and how would you describe your music? Amira: I think aside from the music, in terms of the fact that we’re all individuals, individual people that have come together to make a different sound, I think that is one thing that makes us quite different. Shereen: It’s just us being real, it’s like the music, it’s not polished. Jess: We describe ourselves as four solo artists that always collaborate with each other. I don’t think that we slot into like a stereotypical type of girl band that you’d think of.
Who are your major influences and who would you aspire to be like if you could be like any performer? Amira: I think as a group, we would like the success of the Spice Girls. I think their whole attitude and the fact that they are all different, that’s our inspiration. Jess: Yeah we wanna take the world!
Like world domination? Jess: Exactly! Shereen: Individually, my inspirations are bands like The Temptations, Diana Ross and the Supremes, the whole Motown sound, The Drifters, I love it! Amira: For me, individually, I’d say like Beyoncé, Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson, some rap music. Jess: I really like Pharrell, everything that man does is amazing! The music he makes, him, himself as an artist, him as a producer. That would be a dream collaboration. I also like people like Rihanna, love Rihanna! You can’t not love Rihanna and I love how she just doesn’t really give a damn. Like, similarly with MIA as well, I love her music, she doesn’t really give a damn either, they’re just doing what they wanna do and that’s make music. I love that whole attitude. Asami: For me as I’ve grown up, I listen to a lot of indie bands or bands like The Foo Fighters.
Quite a variety then. So, the video for Trouble looked pretty chaotic, was it as much fun to make as it looks? Shereen: It didn’t feel like work at all, it was just like a fun day out. Amira: We were doing the whole shoot on like two hours sleep each but I was buzzing by the end of it as much as I was at the beginning. Jess: So fun!
