Really, then how come it got to be your middle name? Well we were looking for one word that was quite punchy and straightforward – just two syllables. We kind of felt that from our perspective it captured what we wanted in a name; conciseness, a maturity, it’s quite hard hitting and it’s just the one word which is what we were going for. But also there’s a bit more of a fun thing… I love a programme called One Tree Hill and there’s a character called Peyton, which is spelt differently, but at the time of forming the band I was obsessed with that show so… [laughs]
I did think that when I heard the name of the band! Okay, my next question is – how did you guys meet? Pete, Dave and myself were in a different band actually for a few years before this band. But I’ve known andy from years ago; we went to school together and we wrote a lot and played music together. I think we met in year 9 or 10 and we just spent loads of lunchtimes in the music block messing around with different instruments and stuff.
Sounds great, next I’d like to ask you about how you feel about going on tour with Lawson? really, really, really excited! We’re super stoked on that to be honest; it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for a band our size. We occasionally have to look at ourselves and say ‘is this really happening?’.
So Lawson aside, who would be your dream person (or band) to tour with? Personally, I’d love to tour with a band called Jimmy Eat World, they’re my favourite band. But I know Andy would like to tour with a band like Maroon 5 and Pete would love to tour with Bullet for my Valentine – he’s got a lot of memories there I think. I’m not sure about Dave
though, but he is a massive Bring the Horizon fan. I guess you can see from there the broad range of influences.
What are your plans for the next few months? The day after we finish with Lawson we go back out on tour again with a US singer- songwriter called Tyler Hilton [plays Chris Keller in one Tree hill]. We’re doing a really special set on that tour actually because Tyler plays acoustic on this tour. so it’s just going to be andrew and I playing an acoustic set. so it’s going to be interesting because it’s going to give people who see us on the Lawson tour (and the tour we just did in August) a chance to see us in a completely new light.
Lastly, your twitter bio says ‘Aspiring poet. Storyteller. Articulate. Visionary. The world or nothing’ could you elaborate for us where this combination of words and phrases comes from and how they describe you? haha yes I can indeed, I’d forgotten about that actually! Personally (because that is my personal twitter) what I meant from that was that in this band and in music in general I heavily focus on lyrics. I’ve always been a creative writer, and English and Music were always my strongest subjects at school. I always write; poems, songs, stories. And when I wrote the lyrics for our band, I put everything into that and we’re all very hard workers. ‘all of nothing’ – that’s quite a bold statement really isn’t it? It’s got to be everything with me personally, like I want this to take off. It’s really early days yet but that’s the ultimate vision.
