Viewpoint DEHYDRATION, SPORTS, COMPETING AND YOUR HEALTH

A

n imbalance of electrolytes in an ath- lete can impact cognitive function,

physical abilities and performance as well as emotional and psychological well-being. Proper fluid and electrolyte levels are essential to cel- lular function. Therefore, when competing in sports, it is

important to drink before you feel thirsty…es- pecially when involved in a high activity sport like show jumping. Being thirsty is not a good indicator of hydration and should not be used to monitor hydration status when competing. According to the American College of

Sports Medicine, “Thirst is only one sig- nal that your body is headed toward de- hydration.” Medical studies show that dehydration

affects our ability to live life or compete to its’ fullest. Travel, whether for business or leisure, takes a toll on our bodies: jet- lag, air conditioning, sun, wind, sports, long meetings, drinking and dancing – all which rob our bodies of essential electro- lytes which can impact our weight, ability to sleep, mental abilities, physical perfor- mance, and our ability to deal with every- day stresses such as the show ring. Dehydration, even mild dehydration,

has a myriad of physical and psychologi- cal effects including: headaches, nausea, irritability reduced cognitive function, reduced physical performance, and leth- argy. Most casual athletes can lose up to 3 liters of water per hour and high per- formance sports at least triples that. The effects of moderate dehydration are much more dramatic and can lead to serious consequences such as heat stroke and heart attack. Energy drinks (particularly those with caf-

feine) as well as alcoholic beverages have a di- uretic effect on the body, accelerate dehydration and by extension worsen the effects. Caffeinated drinks are not recommended when rapid rehy- dration after exercise is desired because caffeine can promote modest diuresis. The same is true of alcohol, but to a larger extent. WELL HYDRATED BODIES DURING SPORTS • Medical studies show that dehydration affects our ability to live life to its’ fullest and changes

our ability to compete to our fullest capability. Travel, whether for business or leisure, takes a toll on our bodies: jet-lag, air conditioning, sun, wind, sports, long meetings, drinking and danc- ing – all rob our bodies of essential electrolytes which can impact our weight, ability to sleep, mental abilities, physical performance, and our ability to deal with everyday stresses. • “Road Warriors” are under constant attack
