Marketing student wins national prize
A Portsmouth Business School marketing student has won a national essay prize from the Academy of Marketing
Kerry Walton won the Professor Malcolm McDonald Student Essay Prize 2013 for her essay examining whether sales and marketing work better apart or together.
Walton, now a brand manager at Matchtech, said: “I am very honoured to have been named the winner. Although passionate about the subject, this was not something I expected to win.“
’I believe the inclusion of strategic sales in marketing- based academia is increasingly important ...’
The competition is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students studying marketing in a higher education institution business school, and is named after Professor McDonald, a leading academic authority on marketing strategy. He has been named as
one of the UK’s top 10 business consultants by The Times.
Walton said: “The question covered a topic which has been of particular interest to me through my professional and academic career, so I felt somewhat compelled to enter.
“The topic is an academic and industry- relevant area which I believe is a great fit to the expertise and teaching at the University of Portsmouth.
“I believe the inclusion of strategic sales in marketing-based academia is increasingly important and I would like to praise the University of Portsmouth on its teaching and knowledge within this field.“
Paul Ankers, course leader for the MA Marketing, said: “In today’s competitive business environment it is important for organisations to recognise the need for greater customer engagement and that sales takes a more strategic role with marketing.
In her essay Kerry
explores a number of key contemporary issues surrounding this integration and importantly recognises that one solution does not fit all.
It’s rewarding to see one
of our postgraduates thinking strategically about such an important area.“
