• Journalist and business communications specialist Gareth Lewis has joined Southampton integrated marketing communications agency Carswell Gould. The former business editor of the Southern Daily Echo is heading the communications team at the agency, which specialises in digital marketing, creative, web design and PR. Lewis has handled communications for some of the south’s best-known brands, including Associated British Ports and The National Motor Museum.
• Grant Thornton UK has taken on 10 new members of staff in Hampshire to cater for an increase in work. The business and financial adviser has strengthened its personal tax compliance unit (PTCU) at its Southampton office, with all the new staff members joining in the past month and eight of them starting in the same week. The appointments are a direct result of the office being asked to handle increasing numbers of personal tax cases. Southampton is one of Grant Thornton’s biggest handlers of personal tax returns nationally and the city team deals with more than 3,000 every year. The new staff range from Bournemouth University graduates to staff with decades of experience and the recruitment brings the total number in the Southampton PTCU to 30.
• Nigel Foottit, a leading forensic accountant, has joined BDO LLP in its Southampton office to strengthen the existing team, making it the largest forensic accounting team on the South Coast. Joining from Mazars LLP in Poole, Foottit’s experience includes working on commercial, criminal and matrimonial cases.
• Paris Smith has appointed regulatory law and business crime specialist Sarah Wheadon as a partner. Experienced in key business issues, including health and safety, bribery, environmental, food safety and consumer protection, Wheadon is a co-founder of the Paris Smith Business Club, which won the national Law Society Excellence in Innovation Award 2012. Having joined the firm in 2010, she leads its business crime and regulatory team, and regularly prosecutes on behalf of organisations enforcing animal welfare and marine/fishery legislation.
• IT and data centre specialist C4L has continued its recruitment drive to grow the business in 2013 and recruited sales, marketing and technical professionals to join the team in Bournemouth and London. • Sarah Harrison, Tim Broadway, Harriet Aldridge and Stephanie Edenborough have been promoted to director level within assurance at PwC in Southampton, alongside Alan Gasser in tax. Ian Wishart, office senior partner, said that the appointments underlined commitment to invest in Southampton and grow business in the region.

• Jon Tawse has joined Glanvilles’ business and commercial services team at Havant. He brings with him many years’ experience working in property law, and is one the south’s most knowledgeable legal experts in all matters involving or connected with leasehold enfranchisement. The firm also has offices at Fareham and on the Isle of Wight.
• Graeme Patfield, formerly news editor of The News, Portsmouth, has joined Fareham-based PR consultancy Polymedia as a senior consultant following a series of client wins. Patfield, who brings 17 years’ experience in the regional press, will work on regional, national, broadcast and specialist media campaigns as well as taking a lead in the expanding social media specialism. Clients include Blake Lapthorn and accountancy firm HWB.
• Dawn Baxendale has been appointed chief executive at Southampton City Council, having served as its interim chief executive since March, replacing outgoing chief executive Alistair Neill. Previously director of environment and economy, Baxendale has worked at the city council since 2009.
