Southampton hotels continue to shine in summer months
Hotels in the south reported an increase in occupancy and revenues in the past 12 months, according to figures released by business advisory and accountancy firm BDO LLP.
Southampton hoteliers saw room occupancy increase by 4.3% to 82.1% in June 2013 compared to 78.7% in the same period last year, resulting in improved room yields (the industry term for revenue) of 3.0% to £45.93. Despite the increases, the average price paid for a hotel room dropped by 1.2% to £55.95 from last year’s figures of £56.95.
Similarly, Portsmouth hoteliers saw a 2.7% increase in daily room occupancy from 83.0% to 85.2% in June 2013, compared to June 2012. But in contrast found that both the price paid for hotel rooms and room yields dropped 9.6% and 7.2% respectively.

Chris Driver, audit director at BDO in Southampton, commented: “It is encouraging seeing operators across the south still performing well in terms of occupancy figures year-on-year although this appears to have been achieved by having to discount rates against the backdrop of a continually competitive marketplace and the gradual recovery in the economy.
“Despite a mixed result for Southampton, hoteliers have stabilised revenue in the past quarter and witnessed a growth in occupancy month-on-month. Occupancy levels have also seen a marked increase from 67.4% at the end of Q1 2013 to 82.1% at the end of Q2.“
Driver added: “It appears that the bank holiday season and good weather has treated hoteliers kindly in the past quarter. The market remains challenging, but the sector is, as always, putting up a strong fight.“
