Coffin Mew celebrates major milestones


It may be understandable that in the current challenging climate some businesses feel immobilised, but this is not the case with Coffin Mew as its record results clearly demonstrate


During the past 12 months, one of the Solent’s leading law firms has reached a number of major milestones, not least of which is celebrating its most profitable year to date.


Undoubtedly its strong leadership in managing partner Miles Brown and Nick Gross, senior partner and corporate lawyer, has enabled bold decisions to be taken, and where many businesses have simply reduced spending, Coffin Mew has upped the ante and has ambitious plans for further investment and growth.


Gross, who incidentally has reached his own milestone of 30 years at the firm this month, has helped to steer the £9 million business, and says that it’s entering the most exciting period in its 125-year history.


“It has been an incredibly interesting and challenging time – probably the most rewarding year of my career so far. As a firm, and like so many over the past five years, we’ve had to make some tough business decisions. The business needed consolidating, which


inevitably meant making cuts. But we are now a lean business with talented and committed people and an exciting future.“


Following the recent successful transfer of Coffin Mew’s national Social Housing Group to London law firm Capsticks, the firm is in a position to make significant investments in key areas of its core business, and crucially to move from its old style Kings Park House office into new modern offices in central Southampton. These will mirror the light and bright Lakeside 1000 in North Harbour, Portsmouth.


“We have made some fundamental changes over the past couple of years, including our move to Lakeside and we are developing our business strategy with a strong focus on the Solent region.


“The strength of the business means we are also looking to expand, so we are continuing to look for suitable opportunities. With the economy unlikely to show much growth in the next five years, acquiring strategic businesses will be the key to expansion.

“We wouldn’t have been in a position to consider this had we not made some of those tough decisions during the past few years.


“We are a high-performing business, but quite distinctive from our competitors. Lawyers can sometimes come across as colourless and a bit bland, but we pride ourselves on our personalities and the strong relationships we therefore build with clients. We don’t feel the need to speak in a different language to make things sound more complicated – we communicate openly and accessibly with people. It’s this culture which truly sets us apart.“
