diary – september

The wood has a high degree of stability with excellent thermal insulation. Cedar itself has beautiful tones, a natural preservative against decay and produces a life-long sensual aroma.

Howe added: “I design and build the saunas myself, but I’ve had to learn the skills and it has taken plenty of practice to get right. A lot of the skills have come from my background in aerospace engineering.“

Christchurch-entrepreneur Thomas Howe has been dubbed ’Cooperman’ – after creating saunas in giant barrels

The astonishing barrel saunas are hand-crafted from western red cedar wood which is steam pressed and held together with metal hoops. Each Barrello is 9ft long and 7ft wide and can comfortably accommodate eight people.

The idea originated when Howe was on holiday in Australia a few years ago. Since then he has been learning the techniques and working on the plan to create his own outdoor saunas, which are now attracting plenty of online interest.

“Traditionally saunas are outside,“ said Howe, “as nothing is quite as invigorating on a cold winter’s night or frosty morning. So Barrellos are ideal for private use in gardens, but they are also made for companies, hotels, spas and festivals.“
