Energy-saving refinery wins Excellence award

A £10 million energy scheme which saves as much in carbon emissions as removing 30,000 cars annually from the road has won a top civil engineering award in Hampshire.

The environmentally-friendly project was undertaken by ExxonMobil, with principal contractor Trant, the engineering and civil engineering firm headquartered in Southampton.

It captures and uses heat generated at Fawley oil refinery, the largest refinery and petrochemical plant in the UK.

Following the entry submission by Trant, the innovative project was named overall winner at the Institution of Civil Engineers’ (ICE) South East England Engineering Excellence Awards 2013, held at the De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel.

The awards recognise the best civil engineering projects regionally, with the judges looking for projects that deliver a real benefit to society through the knowledge, skills and professional expertise of civil engineers.

Taking 13 months to complete, the heat recovery project at Fawley, which is owned and operated by ExxonMobil, involves huge flues piping steam

generated from a unit producing an ingredient for petrol. New flues duct the gases to the furnace to produce superheated steam, supplying a third of the steam needed to operate the unit. Previously hot flue gases would have been emitted through the existing stack and the heat wasted.

Contracts’ manager at Trant Colin Monaghan, who submitted the entry, said: “We’re thrilled to have won against tough competition. The finished project is a highly- efficient energy-saving plant, producing steam from hot flue gases which would otherwise have been emitted into the atmosphere.“

John Laverty, director of ICE South East England, added: “As well as achieving a reduction in CO2 emissions, the project also provided ExxonMobil and Trant the opportunity to invest resources into local charities and recruitment of local labour and employment. The project demonstrates how civil engineering can mitigate environmental impacts and benefit the local economy.“

Olympic ripples continue

Two Whiteley-based high-tech engineering firms, Cobham Tactical Communications and Surveillance, have won a $2 million contract to equip state police helicopters with high-definition video surveillance for six cities around Brazil during the 2013 Confederations cup and 2014 World Cup.

The contracts were awarded after providing surveillance at the London 2012 Games and attending meetings and events sponsored by government export body UK Trade & Investment (UKTI).

Bletchley Park-based IT firm Coveritas also secured more than £100,000 of new overseas business, after representing the UK at a prestigious UKTI British Business Embassy event held during the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The firm, which specialises in products which find bugs in software which can cause system crashes, boosted its credibility and received exposure at the British Business Embassy ICT summit (BBE).

The firms are featured in a new report which shows the UK economy has seen a £9.9 billion trade and investment boost from the London Olympic and Paralympic Games, one year into a four-year programme of activity and events.

The boost comes from businesses like Cobham and Coveritas winning additional sales and new foreign investment in the past year, since UKTI’s British Business Embassy at Lancaster House hosted a Global Investment conference and a series of 17 business events, the largest such programme ever held in Britain.

South East regional director for UKTI Lewis Scott commented: “It’s great news that these companies have been able to win new contracts following their attendance at UKTI Olympic events. Hosting the Games really did put ’Brand Britain’ on a world stage and has been a positive platform for local companies to increase overseas sales, backed by the help and support of local UKTI teams.“
