Magical festival of music
THE third Music@Malling Festival promises a special and memorable series of events with an even wider range of magical musical treats.
Running from Thursday to Sunday, September 26 to 29, the festival will bring international artists to historical venues in and around West Malling.
This year’s event celebrates the centenary of the birth of Benjamin Britten, and the composers that inspired him, and will be working with English National Ballet in a groundbreaking outreach project with local schools.
This will culminate in a performance of Stravinsky’s the Soldier’s Tale for hundreds of local schoolchildren at St Mary’s Church, West Malling. A special floor will be laid for the occasion which will feature a principle dancer from the ballet company with Chamber Domaine and narrator Matthew Sharp.
Each festival provides contemporary music alongside the standard classics and this year will include Estonian composer Arvo Part and the young composer Mark Simpson, alongside music by Mozart, Mahler/Schubert and Schumann.
The festival also includes Eynsford Concert Band, jazz from James Pearson, artistic director of Ronnie Scott’s in London, and master classes for regional young musicians.
Internationally-renowned artist Graham Clarke will be displaying some of his work during the festival and there will be a chance to meet him on Saturday 28th at 7pm when he will give a talk laced with his special brand of humour.
The festival’s artistic director Thomas Kemp said: "Britten was a great performer and his favourite composers - Schubert, Mahler, Schumann, Mozart - are featured alongside his own compositions. Like Britten, Mark Simpson is a fantastic instrumentalist and composer who uniquely won the BBC Young Musician of the Year as both a clarinettist and composer. A rising star in the music world, this will be a fantastic chance to hear his music and watch him perform. Arvo Pärt is one of the world's most celebrated contemporary composers and his In Memoriam Benjamin Britten is a starting point for an exploration of his instrumental music.”
Dedicated to building exciting new audiences, Music@Malling offers free tickets to all events to under 21s.
