Church hall would have ‘major impact’
A NEW parish hall in the churchyard of historic St James the Great Church at East Malling would have amajor im- pact on the setting of the grade I listed building, according to an English Heritage expert. Historic buildings architect
David John did not object in principle, but said that “no mat- ter how well designed” the scheme by its nature would have a major impact. He added: “It would be very difficult to provide the pro- posed facilities within the body of the existing church, without having a major impact on the building. Therefore to provide them within a purpose-built room away from the church is a reasonable alternative.” East Malling Parochial Church council has submitted the pro- posals to Tonbridge and Malling Council after two years of design and consultation including parishioners and residents. Architect Glenn Ball said the need for the new building, sited
in the north-west corner of the churchyard, stemmed from the fact “that the church desper- ately desired toilet facilities. During christenings, weddings and funerals, no proper facili- ties are present. Once the toilet facilities were accommodated, a new parish room and small kitchen were seen as beneficial, and could be achieved for rela- tively little expense.” The scheme would result in
the loss of one yew tree, which according to tree experts, was in a poor state, and a nearby ash tree. Mr John said he was con- vinced the PCC had carefully considered all the options. “The proposed building is in
a vernacular style, which does not compete with the church in any way. It is fairly low key, yet appears reasonably attractive for its semi-rural location. It is positioned away from major vistas of the building, and I be- lieve, seeks to limit its impact on its surroundings,” he said.
Bowled over by league debut
tered surveyors Caxtons for their sponsorship whichhelped tomakethis possible. Coach Martyn Senior
said “We are entering in division 7, and have great confidence in our juniors’ ability to perform well in the league. Their progress has been impressive, so much so that some of them are nowable to play in adult cricketmatches. This elevation in standards has been the direct result of Caxtons’ sponsorship, as has the interest in, and expansion of, our clubmembership.” David Gurton, from Caxtons, said: “Many of the youngsters cricketing
skills, particularly in a competitive environment, were very underdevel- opedwhenthey first joined the club, butwith the support and dedication of their coaches, they learn fast; and some of them turn into excellent senior players and lifelong fans of the game.” Martyn added: “These youngsters represent the grass roots of the
game. Without the support of local firmswewould find it difficult to pro- vide the training or kit, sowe are extremely grateful, as are they.” In 2007, the club coached 15-20 children on a weekly basis and now
theyhave80to100juniormembers, up to and including under15s, from West Malling, Kings Hill and the surrounding area.
More staff to man 111 helpline THE NHS 111 helpline has hired another 200 staff after it re- ceived more calls than bosses were anticipating. An average of 800 calls per Saturday and 650 per Sundaywere received when just 600 and 400 were predicted. Helpline staff offer advice to non-emergency patients and the service was sup- posed to replace NHS Direct. Last month (June) Tonbridge andMalling Council sent a list of residents’ concerns about the service to KCC and various NHS organisations including the South East Coast Ambulance Serv- ice, which runs the helpline in partnership with company Har- moni. Complaints included callers being told to dial 999 when another service would have been more appropriate and a lack of knowledge of local out-of-hours services by NHS 111 staff. If demand exceeds expectations in the future, the 111 helpline
