Festival set to leave ‘legacy of support’
Stooshe are among the acts playing at Music on the Hill 2013
AFTER a year of planning, Music On The Hill, Kent’s biggest music festival and one of the UK’s largest charity events, is now just around the corner.
Organisers say ticket sales
have been encouraging and are up on 2011, but repeat that every single ticket sold makes a real difference to the charities, including Demelza Hospice Care for Children. Work will start on the infra- structure aweek before the con- certs begin on July 19. A purpose-built arena has to be constructed on the vacant site at Kings Hill, near West Malling, that hosts the event. Kings Hill New Homes
and Liberty Property Trust UK have supported the event, which is organised and pro- moted by The Children’s Devel- opment Trust, but organisers are keen to stress that the concerts are open to everyone, not just those who live and work at Kings Hill. There is free parking, and
West Malling station is just a few minutes away. The concerts, which feature
artists such as Jools Holland, McFly, Peter Andre, Stooshe, Joe McElderry, Gareth Gates, Bucks Fizz and many more, are organised to raise awareness as well as funds for the beneficiary charities, which also include Teens Unite Fighting Cancer and The Children’s Develop- ment Trust. The festival will also feature entertainment and a very wide variety of food and drink prod- ucts. A 1934 fairground waltzer ride will also be on site, as well as face-painting and other chil- dren’s activities on Family Summer Sunday. Crystal Palace FC’s Crystal Girls cheerleaders
will also brighten up the day with several routines. There are currently no plans
for a third event, with organis- ers saying that they hope Music On The Hill’s legacy is that it encourages others to support the organisations beyond the weekend. Children’s Development Trust trustee and promoter, Colin Thacker, says: “We originally only planned one event, in 2011, and it was successful enough to persuade us to hold it again.
However, the real benefit of
Music On The Hill is if we can encourage others to stay in touch with the charities, get in- volved and help them by fundraising, volunteering or taking part in other events or- ganised during the year. That’s the real value of this kind of event. “It is shocking that charities
such as Demelza have to raise more than 90% of their income, which makes events such as Music On the Hill so vital. I cannot imagine what it must be like to have a child with a ter- minal condition or a teenager with cancer. “All we are asking people to
