Firm plans for Sutton Road

THE prospect of almost 900 homes being built in the Sutton Road area of Maidstone has moved closer after planning ap- plications for three separate sites were lodged. They consist of two full appli- cations and one screening opin- ion. The latest full planning ap- plication to be submitted to Maidstone Council is an outline application to build up to 600 homes, a primary school, shops and a pub on fields to the south of Sutton Road, between Bir- cholt Road and Langley Park Driving Range. Developer Tay- lorWimpey also hopes to create a community centre, allotments and a nature conservation area at the 32ha development, known as Langley Park, and there is the potential for offices and a care home near the site entrance. It proposes creating a roundabout in Sutton Road giv- ing access to the site and has suggested a bus route could run into the site. A 10m wide “woodland buffer” is planned for the devel- opment’s western boundary to separate it from Parkwood In- dustrial Estate. Buildings will be mainly two and 2.5 storeys with some three storey and will vary in size and style. Bellway Homes has applied

Standards rise TEACHING is improving at New Line Learning Academy following a disappointing Of- sted report earlier in the year. In March, inspectors said the Boughton Lane secondary school required improvement and gave it a grade 3. However, following a monitoring inspection in June, Ofsted has revealed improve- ments are being made. Principal David Elliot was told

for permission to build 186 homes on a 5.58ha site border- ing Gore Court Road, Park Wood, to be known as Imperial Park. Homes of varying sizes and styles would be built with 30% of them, 56 units, being af- fordable housing. The planning application states that, in accor- dancewithMaidstone’s existing development plan, Bicknor Wood and Bicknor Hole, both areas of ancient woodland, would remain untouched. The development would be divided into five distinct areas with The Avenue leading onto the site; The Crescent having an urban feel with Georgian town- house-inspired homes; Eastside containing mainly terraced houses;Woodland featuring de- tached dwellingswith plenty of space around each one; and

Mews being made up of smaller homes. Finally, in July, Redrow Homes submitted a screening opinion indicating it intended to apply for planning permis- sion to build about 100 homes on 3.8ha of land to the east of Imperial Park. Redrow and Bell- way say they are co-operating to ensure the developments pro- ceed “in a co-ordinated man- ner”. The council’s emerging core strategy and local plan 2000 identified all three sites as suit- able for residential develop- ment. The council will determine both planning appli- cations and decide whether Redrow needs to carry out an environmental impact assess- ment before it can submit a full planning application.

he and his staff were focusing on the right areas and in addition to improved teaching, New Line Learning Academy was praised for monitoring pupils’ progress more effectively, resulting in more effective teaching and extra help for pupils who needed it. Mr Elliot was advised that in

order to improve further the school should set clearer targets to measure improvement; en- sure subject leaders used their expertise to help colleagues im- prove their teaching; and find ways of engaging all pupils in lessons.

Drive change wanted RICHARD Bradley has applied to create a vehicle crossover at 35 Spot Lane, Bearsted. His plan consists of demolish-

ing existing front brickwalls and lowering five kerbstones to allow access to an widened parking area.Maidstone Council will determine the planning ap- plication.
