Kaddy brings sunshine to fete

THERE was more sunshine than even weather presenter Kaddy-Lee Preston could have fore- cast for the Bearsted and Thurnham Carnival and Fayre. Kaddy performed the opening ceremony at

Bearsted Green after a parade of floats and walkinggroupsarrived at thearena. The colour- ful procession, accompanied by a band, fol- lowed its traditional route from Madginford, crossingAshfordRoad, then heading along The Landway to the arena. This year’s event had the theme of a tradi-

tional country fayre, with the prize for the best dressed stall going to Bearsted Methodist Church.

Thousands of people enjoyed the glorious

weather, displays and entertainment and browsedthe stallsand sideshowsonthe Green. Nowin its 33rd year, the event is expected to

have raised thousands of pounds for local good causes. This year, the bulk of the money will go to Macmillan Cancer Support and Slide Away, which offers bereavement support for children and young people inWest Kent. Eleven-year-old Rebecca Tunnicliffe was

TV trees can go A BEARSTED man has been given planning permission to remove two protected ash trees he claimedwere ruining his tel- evision signal. Ian Forrest said the trees had hampered his reception since moving to a home in Button Lane 10 years ago. Maidstone Council granted consent for him to fell the trees on condi- tion that they are replaced by two trees within 25m of those being removed.

22 East ‘Messy’ sycamore to be grounded

MAIDSTONE Council has given planning permission for a sycamore tree to be felled in Bearsted Green. Applicant Charles Bedford’s supporting statement said the tree at Heacham was adversely affecting six silver birch trees he planted nine years ago. It added: “My two neighbours

have complained in the nicest possible way that the sycamore totally shades the sun from

their rear gardens from 3pm on- wards. “I am 84 years old and good relationships with my neigh- bours are absolutely essential. The sycamore is by its nature a very messy tree and requires constant cleaning of drive and paths and this I find increas- ingly difficult to do. The ap- pearance of the silver birches, planted by me, is more impor- tant than that of the sycamore.”

Dementia wing PLANNING permission has been granted for a new de- mentia wing at the Barty House Nursing Home in Roundwell, Bearsted. Canford Healthcare was

given consent to extend the 18th century building to pro- vide an 18-bedroom unit. The building is currently reg- istered to accommodate 59 residents.
