Previously a three times winner of this award during his Grant Thornton days, Simon Davies returned to the fray as one of three shortlisted contenders for the title of Corporate Finance Adviser of the Year, sponsored by law firm Bond Dickinson.
Well known to the Southampton CF community, Davies is one of the founders of Spectrum Corporate Finance, which he has helped grow to become a major contender in the south, including deals for Serco, Arquiva and the sale of Industry Media.
Joining him as fellow nominees and determined to share the spotlight, were Michael Barcia of Meridian Corporate Finance and Darren Miller of RSM Tenon.
Barcia has a strong reputation as a deal getter and has been at the forefront of a successful year for the Meridian team. During the relevant awards period, he completed eight transactions – five disposals and three MBOs – acting as lead adviser, and has also undertaken five non-exec roles. One nomination said: “He couples an amazing talent of numbers with a savvy understanding of commercial reality.“
Over the 11 years he has been running Meridian, Barcia has advised on more than 100 completed transactions and was described as “working tirelessly“ for his clients, as well as being praised for always trying to keep deals local.
RSM Tenon‘s Miller was singled out in nominations for attention to detail and his willingness to “burn the midnight oil“ to get a deal done. He was described as an “excellent negotiator“ and applauded for his role in raising the firm‘s profile in the south coast deal arena.
Among the deals he worked on was the sale of Portsmouth-based Cope Allman Jaycare, a manufacturer of plastic pharmaceutical packaging and medical devices, to Nolato Group, a Swedish injection moulder.
Praising his work, one of the nominations said: “With Darren we always felt in safe and experienced hands as the deal was completed, all at a time when the economic backdrop was less than favourable.“
It was down to Stephen Pierce, partner at Bond Dickinson, to announce the winner – and it was Darren Miller who triumphed on the night.
He later commented: “The nominations I received for Corporate Finance Adviser and Dealmaker, together with RSM Tenon‘s nomination as Corporate Finance Team of the Year and our nomination within the Deal of the Year category, are all great recognition for the commitment our team has to generate deal activity in the region and give excellent advice to our clients.
THE BUSINESS MAGAZINE – SOLENT & SOUTH CENTRAL – JULY/AUGUST 2013

“As widely acknowledged, there are no easy deals in this tough economic climate and so completing 29 deals with a combined value of over £250 million during the period is a major achievement. The team has been particularly successful in transactions in the technology, recruitment, financial services, renewable energy and retail sectors, and through the RSM International network we have also seen an increase in international deals. Particular highlights for me were the sale of Cope Allman Jaycare to Nolato AB and the MBO of City Motor Holdings.
“We have a very strong team in the region led by four partners – Peter Vandervelde, David Copley, Nick Williams and myself, with a combined 75 years‘ corporate finance experience between us. We take a hands-on role, driving deals for our clients and clearly we have a wealth of expertise to draw on to help them get their deals over the line and completed on the best possible terms.“
