A STATUE paying tribute to a man who died in The Charge of The LightBrigade has been unveiled in Maidstone. Captain LouisEdward Nolanwas


a cavalry officer of the 15th Kings RoyalHussarsandridingmasterat Maidstone Cavalry Depot from 1841 to 1854. He died at the Battle of Bal-


aklavaonOctober 25,1854, riding with the 17th Lancers during The Charge of the Light Brigade. It is thought Captain Nolan was


a regular worshipper at Holy Trin- ity Church and upon his death, a carved stone plaquewas installed there. However, when the church was converted into the Trinity Foyer inthemid1990s, theplaque disappeared. Maidstone Borough Council commissioned a statue ofCaptain Nolan and the bronze sculpture was unveiled outside the Trinity Foyerby the DeputyMayorofMaid- stone, Cllr Clive English (pictured). Set on top of aKentish ragstone


plinth with black granite panels, it features a copy of the memorial thatwas sited in Trinity Church. The rest of thepanels tellofCap-


tain Nolan’s involvement with Maidstone and the CrimeanWar. The lead artist for the project was Cllr Gordon Newton, owner of
